Basil (film)
''Basil'' is a 1998 British historical drama film directed by Radha Bharadwaj and starring Christian Slater, Jared Leto, Claire Forlani and Derek Jacobi. It was based on the 1852 novel ''Basil'' by Victorian author Wilkie Collins. The adaptation is by Bharadwaj. Plot Basil ( Jared Leto) recalls his younger days when he and his ennobled British family live at their Cornwall estate of Windermere Hall. His father, Frederick (Derek Jacobi), is a firm believer that people should know their place in society. Clara Fairfax is an orphaned daughter of Basil's father's friend, and comes to live with Basil's family. Basil's older brother, Ralph, is, for his transgression with a local girl, banished to a distant, derelict family manor in Yorkshire. ''Basil'' (1852) is the second novel written by British author Wilkie Collins, after '' Antonina''. Plot summary Basil, son of a father who values the family pedigree and who would not let him marry below his station, falls in love at first sight with a girl he sees on a bus. He follows her and discovers she is Margaret Sherwin, only daughter of a linen draper. He persuades her father to let him marry her secretly. He agrees on the condition, that, as his daughter is only seventeen, they live apart for the first year. At first the secret works, but then the mysterious Mannion, whose emotions cannot be read in his face, returns from abroad. On the last night of the year Basil follows Margaret and Mannion and discovers them ''in flagrante delicto''. Basil attacks Mannion in the street and tries to murder him, but succeeds only in mutilating his face by pushing it into the fresh tarmacadam in the road. Michael Lieber
Michael Lieber is a British novelist, essayist and short story writer. Lieber's novels are The War Hero, The Boy and the Goldlock and Helga Dune. He has also appeared in films. His first film was in the 2013 biopic '' Ramanujan'', a period drama set in 1914 about the life of mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. Lieber played mathematician John Edensor Littlewood, starring alongside Kevin Mcgowan, Cloudia Swann, and Richard Walsh. When preparing to play the part, he spoke to professor Béla Bollobás who had worked with Littlewood. In 2010, he starred as the over-the-hill footballer Ray Keane in the play ''Transfer Deadline Day'' at the Courtyard Theater, London, England. The American Film Market (AFM) is a film industry event held each year in early November. Historically, more than 7,000 people attend the eight-day annual event to network and to sell, finance and acquire films. Participants come from more than 70 countries and include acquisition and development executives, agents, attorneys, directors, distributors, festival directors, financiers, film commissioners, producers, writers, etc. Founded in 1981, the AFM is a marketplace for the film business, where unlike a film festival, production and distribution deals are the main focus of the participants.
