Basel Sinfonietta
The Basel Sinfonietta is a Swiss orchestra, based in Basel. History The Basel Sinfonietta was founded in 1980, as a self-governing ensemble, by a group of young musicians with a focus on contemporary classical music. The orchestra has presented more than 50 world premieres, many of them commissioned by the orchestra itself, such as ''Siegel'' (2008) and ''Viaggiatori'' (2011) by Andrea Lorenzo Scartazzini. The Sinfonietta is the only Swiss orchestra to have been invited four times to participate in the famous Austrian Salzburger Festspiele. The orchestra has performed at festivals such as the ''Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik'', the Lucerne Festival, the ''Biennale di Venezia'', Musica Strasbourg, the ''Festival d'Automne Paris'' and ''Kunstfest Weimar''. Andrea Lorenzo Scartazzini
Andrea Lorenzo Scartazzini (born 1971) is a Swiss composer whose operas have been performed at leading European opera houses. Career Born in Basel, he studied there German studies and Italian studies. He changed to studying composition with Rudolf Kelterborn at the Musikhochschule Basel, which he continued with Wolfgang Rihm in Karlsruhe. In 1999/2000, he studied one semester at the Royal Academy of Music. He has worked as a composer, and in the beginning also as a music teacher. His works have been performed at major festivals such as the Salzburg Easter Festival, Lucerne Festival and Darmstädter Ferienkurse. Lucerne Festival is one of the leading international festivals in the world of classical music and presents a series of classical music festivals based in Lucerne, Switzerland. Baldur Brönnimann (born 1968, Basel) is a Swiss conductor. Biography Born in Basel, Brönnimann studied at the Musik-Akademie der Stadt Basel and was a junior fellow in conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. From 2008 to 2012, Brönniman was the music director of the National Symphony Orchestra of Colombia, and from 2011 to 2015, he was artistic director of Norway's BIT20 Ensemble. Brönnimann was principal conductor of the Orquestra Sinfonica do Porto Casa da Música from 2015 to 2020. Brönnimann became the first-ever principal conductor of the Basel Sinfonietta in 2016. Sinfoniettas (orchestras)
A sinfonietta is a symphony that is smaller in scale (either in terms of length or the instrumental forces required), or lighter in approach than a standard symphony. Although of Italian form, the word is not genuine in that language and has seldom been used by Italian composers. It appears to have been coined in 1874 by Joachim Raff for his Op. 188, but became common usage only in the early 20th century . Just as the term ''symphony'' itself can refer to pieces of music of varied size and scope, it is difficult to identify common criteria which pieces called ''sinfonietta'' share.
