Baseball At The 2007 Pan American Games
Baseball at the 2007 Pan American Games was contested between teams representing Brazil, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, United States, and Venezuela. The 2007 edition was the 15th Pan American Games, and was hosted by Rio de Janeiro. Baseball games took place at Cidade do Rock, which received temporary facilities for baseball competitions, with a stadium and training fields. Cuba entered the competition as the nine-time defending champions, having won each gold medal dating back to 1971. They successfully defended their title, with the United States finishing second. Tournament The competition had eight teams divided in two groups. In each group, each team played against all others once and the two best advanced to the semifinals. The best team from Group A will play the second team from Group B and vice versa. Ties within a group were broken by the team allowing the lowest number of runs to pass to the knockout round. Cidade Do Rock
The City of Rock (''Cidade do Rock''), located in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, is an events venue best known for hosting the music festival Rock in Rio. Old City of Rock The City of Rock was created for the Rock in Rio festival in 1985. In 2001, the event returned there for its third edition. It held crowds of up to 250,000 people in one night. With the name "Complexo Esportivo Cidade do Rock" (City of Rock Sports Complex), the area became one of the venues of the 2007 Pan American Games. Temporary stadiums for baseball and softball, with a capacity of 3,000 and 2,000 respectively, were erected on the site. Eduardo Paret Pérez (born October 23, 1972 in Santa Clara) is a Cuban baseball player. He is a shortstop for Villa Clara of the Cuban National Series, and for the Cuban national baseball team. Paret was the starting shortstop on the Cuban teams that won gold medals at the 1996 and 2004 Summer Olympics and second place at the 2006 World Baseball Classic. He was named most valuable player of the 2005 World Cup of Baseball after going 12 for 19 with 8 stolen bases in the tournament. Yunesky Maya Mendizula (born August 28, 1981) is a Cuban-born professional baseball pitcher for the Diablos Rojos del México of the Mexican Baseball League y actualmente juega con las Águilas Cibaeñas del Cibao en República Dominicana. Pedro Luis Lazo Iglesias (born April 15, 1973 in Pinar del Río Province, Cuba) is a top pitcher in Cuban baseball. He is used predominantly as a reliever in international competition, although he is a starter in the Cuban National Series, where he plays for Pinar del Río. Yulieski Gourriel Castillo (born June 9, 1984), commonly known as Yuli Gurriel and nicknamed "La Piña", is a Cuban professional baseball first baseman who is a free agent.
