Baseball At The 1979 Pan American Games
Baseball competitions at the 1979 Pan American Games in San Juan, Puerto Rico, were held on July 2–12. The venues for the competition were the Juan Ramón Loubriel Stadium, the Guaynabo Municipal Stadium and the Parque Yldefonso Solá Morales. Cuba entered the competition as the two-time defending champions, having won the gold medal in 1971 and 1975. They successfully defended their title, with the Dominican Republic finishing second. The baseball tournament at the Pan American Games has long been considered to be one of the premier international baseball events in the world, even higher than the Olympic Games. This is because the level of competition is higher than in the Olympics, where only two teams from the Americas traditionally were permitted to qualify. Cuba has dominated the tournament since its inception. In 2013, a women's tournament was added to the program, effective with the 2015 Games. A total of seven men and five women's teams competed in each tournament respectively. In 2019, the women's tournament will not be held, with the men's tournament scheduled for 8 teams. Rafael Leonidas Belliard Matias (born October 24, 1961) is a retired professional baseball shortstop who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1982 to 1998 with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Atlanta Braves.
