Bascapè
Bascapè is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the Province of Pavia in the Italian region Lombardy, located about southeast of Milan and about northeast of Pavia. Bascapè borders the following municipalities: Carpiano, Casaletto Lodigiano, Caselle Lurani, Cerro al Lambro, Landriano, Torrevecchia Pia, and Valera Fratta. History On October 27, 1962, Enrico Mattei, on a flight from Catania, Sicily to Milan's Linate Airport, died when his jet airplane, a Morane-Saulnier MS.760 Paris, crashed in the countryside near Bascapè. Pilot Irnerio Bertuzzi and the American journalist William McHale were also killed with Mattei. Torrevecchia Pia
Torrevecchia Pia is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the Province of Pavia in the Italian region Lombardy, located about 25 km southeast of Milan and about 15 km northeast of Pavia. Torrevecchia Pia borders the following municipalities: Bascapè, Landriano, Marzano, Valera Fratta and Vidigulfo. History Torre Vecchia, as the community was known since the 11th century, was initially part of the feud of Bascapè, belonging to the homonymous family, then passing in the 16th century to the fief of Landriano, belonging to the Taverna. In the eighteenth century it was no longer in a fiefdom. Since the thirteenth century, if not earlier, it belonged to the Milan area, and precisely to the civil parish church of San Giuliano. Irnerio Bertuzzi
Irnerio Bertuzzi (October 9, 1919 – October 27, 1962) was an Italian military aviator of World War II who also served as personal pilot to Enrico Mattei, head of the Italian petroleum company Eni. He died at age of 43 when the aircraft he was flying was sabotaged to crash. Military career During World War II he flew Savoia-Marchetti SM.79 aircraft in the ''Aerosiluranti'' (torpedo bomber) squadrons of Regia Aeronautica with the rank of ''Tenente''. After 8 September 1943 he chose to fight for the Italian Social Republic as a member of the ''Gruppo Aerosiluranti Buscaglia-Faggioni''. Commander of the 2nd Squadron of Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana, he led several torpedo bombing raids against the Allied fleet at Anzio and Gibraltar, often by night, since Bertuzzi was exceptionally skilled in instrument flight. Enrico Mattei
Enrico Mattei (; 29 April 1906 – 27 October 1962) was an Italian public administrator. After World War II he was given the task of dismantling the Italian petroleum agency Agip, a state enterprise established by the Fascist regime. Instead Mattei enlarged and reorganized it into the National Fuel Trust ( it, Ente Nazionale Idrocarburi, ENI). Under his direction ENI negotiated important oil concessions in the Middle East as well as a significant trade agreement with the Soviet Union, which helped break the oligopoly of the " Seven Sisters" that dominated the mid-20th-century oil industry.
