Baryatinsky District (russian: Барятинский райо́н) is an administrativeCharter of Kaluga Oblast and municipalLaw #354-OZ district (raion), one of the twenty-four in Kaluga Oblast, Russia. It is located in the west of the oblast. The area of the district is . Its administrative center is the rural locality (a '' selo'') of Baryatino. Population: 6,614 ( 2002 Census); The population of Baryatino accounts for 43.3% of the district's total population. Geography Baryatinsky District is located in the western region of Kaluga Oblast, on the Baryatinsky-Suhinichskoy plain. Most of the district is on karst terrain, with plains covering most of the south, and ridges up to 279 meters in the north on the border with Smolensk Oblast. About 40 percent of the region is deciduous forest (birch, aspen, spruce, pine). Yury Nikitich Baryatinski (russian: Юрий Никитич Барятинский; born in 1610, died in 1685) was a Tsardom of Russia, Russian knyaz, boyar and Voivode, voyevoda from the Rurikid house of Baryatinsky. Baryatinsky was born as a son of Nikita Petrovich Baryatinsky. He was born in 1610 but there are no records of the specific location. Until 1653 he made a military career and served in several cities before he was sent as a diplomat to Lithuania. When the Russo-Polish War (1654–67), Russo-Polish War 1654—67 broke out Baryatinsky was one of the military leaders on the Russian side. In 1654, in the Battle of Szkłów (1654), Battle of Szkłów he defeated a Lithuanian army of Janusz Radziwiłł (1612–55), Janusz Radziwill which was twice as big as his detachment, thus helping the Siege of Smolensk (1654), surrender of Smolensk. Princess Leonilla Ivanovna Baryatinskaya, Princess of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn (russian: link=no, Леонилла Ивановна Барятинская; 9 May 1816 – 1 February 1918) was a Russian aristocrat who married Ludwig, Prince of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn. She was the subject of a number of portraits by Franz Xaver Winterhalter. Life and family Princess Leonilla Ivanovna Baryatinskaya was born on 9 May 1816 in Moscow. She was a daughter of Prince Ivan Ivanovich Baryatinsky (1772-1825), a member of one of the most influential families of the Russian nobility, and son of Princess Catherine of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Beck.
