Bartolomeu De Gusmão
Bartolomeu Lourenço de Gusmão (December 1685 – 18 November 1724) was a Brazilian-born Portuguese priest and naturalist, who was a pioneer of lighter-than-air airship design. Early life Gusmão was born at Santos, then part of the Portuguese colony of Brazil. He began his novitiate in the Society of Jesus at Bahia when he was about fifteen years old, but left the order in 1701. He went to Portugal and found a patron at Lisbon in the person of the Marquis of Abrantes. He completed his course of study at the University of Coimbra, devoting his attention principally to philology and mathematics, but received the title of Doctor of Canon Law (related to Theology). He is said to have had a remarkable memory and a great command of languages. Edgar Jaime Pereira Bartolomeu (born September 14, 1976) is an Angolan former professional footballer who played as a defender and midfielder. Playing career Early career Bartolomeu started off playing Futsal in 1992 in Portugal with the Sporting Clube de Portugal youth team. After moving to Canada, he signed with the North York Astros of the Canadian Professional Soccer League. He made his debut on October 4, 1998, in a semi-final playoff match against the Toronto Olympians. In 1999, he signed a professional contract with the Toronto Lynx. He made his debut on May 2, 1999, in a match against the Minnesota Thunder. The following season Bartolomeu helped the Lynx finish third in the Northeastern division which clinched a playoff berth for the club for the second time in the franchise's history. Bartolomeu Cid dos Santos (Barto) (24 August 1931 – 21 May 2008) was a Portuguese artist and professor who specialized in the plastic arts, with an emphasis on printmaking and engravings. Bartolomeu Cid dos Santos was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1931. He studied at the Escola Superior de Belas Artes, a Portuguese school for fine arts, from 1950 until 1956. Santos furthered his art training at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, the United Kingdom, from 1956 until 1958. He studied under Anthony Gross while attending The Slade School of Fine Art, UCL. Santos held his first personal, public art exhibition at the Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes in Lisbon in 1959. Bartolomeu Dias ( 1450 – 29 May 1500) was a Portuguese mariner and explorer. In 1488, he became the first European navigator to round the southern tip of Africa and to demonstrate that the most effective southward route for ships lay in the open ocean, well to the west of the African coast. His discoveries effectively established the sea route between Europe and Asia. Early life Bartholomeu Dias was born around 1455. His family had a maritime background and one of his ancestors, Dinis Dias, explored the African coast in the 1440s and discovered the Cape Verde Peninsula in 1445. Bartolomeu Perestrello (, in Italian ''Bartolomeo Perestrello''), 1st Capitão Donatário, Lord and Governor of the Island of Porto Santo ( 1395 – 1457) was a Portuguese navigator and explorer that is claimed to have discovered and populated Porto Santo Island (1419) together with João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira. Bartolomeu Português (1623–1670) was a Portuguese buccaneer who attacked Spanish shipping in the late 1660s. Português was responsible for the creation of the first "Pirate's Code". Piratical career Arriving in the Caribbean sometime in the early 1660s, as did many others during the decade, Português operated off Campeche from 1666 to 1669. He later captured a larger Spanish ship with his ship of four guns and a crew of thirty, off Cuba, after two assaults with over half his crew killed or wounded. With a total of 70,000 pieces of eight and a cargo of 120,000 pounds of cacao beans, Português attempted to sail towards Jamaica; however, due to strong winds, they were unable to return to Port Royal - instead sailing for western Cuba. As the ship reached Cape San Antonio, they were captured by three Spanish warships who seized their cargo.
