Bartlett Park
Bartlett Park is a public open space in Poplar in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in London on Upper North Street. It is located to the south of the Limehouse Cut waterway and the Lansbury Estate to the south and east of the park. The whole landscape is . History St Saviour's Church remains in the centre of park, surrounded by a single row of self-build housing. The park named in honour of Prebendary Philip M. Bartlett, who died in 1958 and had been vicar of the Church for 39 years. St. Saviour's was almost destroyed by fire on 25 May 2007, but the shell remains since it is a Grade II listed building. The park is host to a football club called Senrab F.C. who train here. Tower Hamlets Council undertook a public consultation on regeneration of the park in May–June 2012. Poplar is a district in East London, England, the administrative centre of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, borough of Tower Hamlets. Five miles (8 km) east of Charing Cross, it is part of the East End of London, East End. It is identified as a major district centre in the London Plan, with its district centre being Chrisp Street Market, a significant commercial and retail centre surrounded by extensive residential development. The London Borough of Tower Hamlets is a London boroughs, London borough covering much of the traditional East End of London, East End. It was formed in 1965 from the merger of the former Metropolitan boroughs of the County of London, metropolitan boroughs of Metropolitan Borough of Stepney, Stepney, Metropolitan Borough of Poplar, Poplar, and Metropolitan Borough of Bethnal Green, Bethnal Green. Limehouse Cut
The Limehouse Cut is a largely straight, broad canal in the East End of London which links the lower reaches of the Lee Navigation to the River Thames. Opening on 17 September 1770, and widened for two-way traffic by 1777, it is the oldest canal in the London area. Although short, it has a diverse social and industrial history. Formerly discharging directly into the Thames, since 1968 it has done so indirectly by a connection through Limehouse Basin. The Cut is about long. It turns in a broad curve from Bow Locks, where the Lee Navigation meets Bow Creek; it then proceeds directly south-west through the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, finally making a short hook to connect to Limehouse Basin. Lansbury Estate
The Lansbury Estate is a large, historic council housing estate in Poplar and Bromley-by-Bow in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. It is named after George Lansbury, a Poplar councillor and Labour Party MP. History Lansbury Estate is one of the largest such estates in London. It occupies an area bounded by the East India Dock Road to the south, the Docklands Light Railway to the east and the Limehouse Cut canal to the north-west. Layout of the estate, built on a site badly damaged by bombing during the Second World War, began in 1949 to a design by London County Council planners led by Arthur Ling and Percy Johnson-Marshall. Construction of the estate started shortly before 1951 as the Live Architecture Exhibition for the Festival of Britain, with Frederick Gibberd's Chrisp Street Market area and the Trinity Independent Chapel. Senrab F.C. is a Sunday League football club, based at Wanstead Flats in the Forest Gate district of London, England. It is noted for the high number of professional players who played for the club in their youth. History The club takes its name from Senrab Street in Stepney; the club's players trained at Marion Richardson School on Senrab Street (which is close to Barnes Street, and is 'Barnes' spelt backwards). The club was founded in 1961 by then 15-year-old Jimmy Tindall (later a youth development officer for West Ham United), playing eight-a-side at first before progressing to 11-a-side within two years.
