Charles St Leger Barter
Major-General Sir Charles St Leger Barter, (1857–1931) was a career British Army officer. Military career Charles Barter was the son of the Rev J T Barter of Bercham, Co Cork. A graduate of Royal Military College, Sandhurst, he began his military career with a commission in the 105th Foot in 1875. Later attending the Staff College, Camberley in 1883, he served in several military campaigns including the Fourth Ashanti War and the Tirah campaign. From 1899 to 1902 he was in command of the 2nd Battalion of the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, serving in South Africa during the Second Boer War. The battalion served with General Bruce Hamilton in the Transvaal during the later stages of the war, and he was in command at Ermelo in March 1902. After the war had ended in June 1902, Barter resigned his command of the battalion and was placed on half-pay with a brevet promotion to colonel on 19 July 1902, leaving Cape Town for Southampton the following month. Captain Frederick Barter VC MC (17 January 1891 – 15 May 1952) was a British Army officer and a Welsh recipient of the Victoria Cross (VC), the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He was born in Cardiff. He was 24 years old, and a company sergeant major in the Special Reserve, The Royal Welch Fusiliers, British Army, attached to the 1st Battalion, The Royal Welch Fusiliers during the First World War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC. On 16 May 1915 at Festubert, France, Company Sergeant-Major Barter, when in the first line of German trenches, called for volunteers to enable him to extend our line, and with the eight men who responded, he attacked the German position with bombs, capturing three German officers, 102 men and 500 yards of their trenches. Marion Barter (born 3 October 1945) is an Australian missing person, teacher and mother-of-two, who disappeared on Sunday 22 June 1997 from Southport, Queensland. She was dropped off at a bus station in Surfers Paradise, Queensland to go to the airport for a planned, long-term vacation in England. She has not been seen since. Sir Peter Leslie Charles Barter (26 March 1940 – 21 June 2022) was an Australian-born, naturalised Papua New Guinean businessman and politician based in the Madang Province, where he owned and operated the Madang Resort. He was Governor of Madang from 1997 to 2002 where he served as Minister for Health and Bougainville Affairs in the Papua New Guinean Government and was active in the reconciliation movement in Bougainville. Richard Barter (physician)
Richard Barter (1802 – 3 October 1870) was an Irish physician and proponent of hydropathy. He collaborated with David Urquhart on the introduction of Turkish baths into the United Kingdom. Barter founded St Ann's Hydro, Ireland's first hydropathic establishment at St Ann's Hill, located near Cork. Early life and family Richard barter was born in 1802 in Cooldaniel, County Cork. His parents were Richard and Elizabeth Barter (née Berkely). He had 6 siblings. Barter was trained at the College of Physicians in London, and became a members of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1828. He returned to Ireland to take up a position in Inniscarra, County Cork as a dispensary doctor. He married Mary Newman in 1836. She was the daughter John Newman of Dromore, County Cork.
