The New York City Council is the lawmaking body of New York City. It has 51 members from 51 council districts throughout the five Borough (New York City), boroughs. The council serves as a check against the Mayor of New York City, mayor in a mayor-council government model, the performance of city agencies land use decisions, and legislating on a variety of other issues. It also has sole responsibility for approving the city budget. Members elected in or after 2010 are limited to two consecutive four-year terms in office but may run again after a four-year respite; however, members elected before 2010 may seek third successive terms. New York City's 9th City Council district is one of 51 districts in the New York City Council. It is currently represented by Democrat Kristin Richardson Jordan, who took office in 2022. Geography District 9 is based in Harlem in upper Manhattan, also covering smaller parts of East Harlem, Hamilton Heights, and Manhattanville. St. Nicholas Park and Marcus Garvey Park are both located in the district. The district overlaps with Manhattan Community Boards 9, 10, and 11, and is contained entirely within New York's 13th congressional district. It has been represented by Democrat Eric Dinowitz since a 2021 special election to succeed fellow Democrat Andrew Cohen.
