Barry M. Costello
Vice Admiral Barry Michael Costello (born January 31, 1951) is an American navy officer who served as commander of Third Fleet of the United States Navy from May 2005 to May 2007. Biography Costello was born in Rutland, Vermont, the son of Bartley Costello, a lawyer, and Catherine (''née'' O'Brien).Vermont State Archives and Records Administration; Montpelier, Vermont; ''Vermont Birth Records, 1909-2008'' He is of Irish descent. He attended College of the Holy Cross and was commissioned an ensign through the NROTC Program in 1973. Rutland (city), Vermont
The city of Rutland is the seat of Rutland County, Vermont, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city had a total population of 15,807. It is located approximately north of the Massachusetts state line, west of New Hampshire state line, and east of the New York state line. Rutland is the third largest city in the state of Vermont after Burlington and South Burlington. It is surrounded by the town of Rutland, which is a separate municipality. The downtown area of the city is listed as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places. The Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) program is a college-based, commissioned officer training program of the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps. Origins A pilot Naval Reserve unit was established in September 1924 at St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland. It let the Navy test the concept before establishing its regular units. In 1926, the U.S. Department of the Navy established the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps. Its purpose was to produce a reserve of qualified officers who would be needed for a possible rapid expansion of the military in the case of an unforeseen emergency. Defense Meritorious Service Medal
The Defense Meritorious Service Medal (DMSM) is an award bestowed upon members of the United States military by the United States Department of Defense. In the order of precedence of the United States Armed Forces, it is worn between the Purple Heart and the Meritorious Service Medal. The medal is awarded in the name of the Secretary of Defense to members of the Armed Forces who, while serving in a joint activity, distinguish themselves by non-combat outstanding achievement or meritorious service, but not of a degree to warrant award of the Defense Superior Service Medal. The medal is not the same as the Meritorious Service Medal, which is a separate federal military decoration. Carrier Strike Group 15, (CSG-15 or CARSTRKGRU 15, and sometimes spelled out, viz. "Fifteen") is a training formation of the United States Navy. It trains and certifies Pacific Fleet Carrier Strike Groups, Amphibious Ready Groups, and independently deploying surface ships.
