Barry Inglis Medal
The Barry Inglis Medal is awarded by the National Measurement Institute, Australia for leadership, research and/or applications of measurement techniques. It is named in honour of Barry Inglis, inaugural CEO and Chief Metrologist of Australia’s National Measurement Institute (NMI) which was set up in 2004. The inaugural medal was in 2008. National Measurement Institute, Australia
The National Measurement Institute (NMI) is Australia's peak measurement body responsible for biological, chemical, legal and physical measurement and is currently administered within the Australian Government's Department of Industry, Innovation and Science. History NMI was created in 2004 from an amalgamation of the National Measurement Laboratory, itself formerly a facility within the CSIRO, with the National Standards Commission and the Australian Government Analytical Laboratories. On 1 July 2010, NMI assumed responsibility for trade measurement under a national system. The Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources was a department of the Australian Government responsible for consolidating the Government’s efforts to drive economic growth, productivity and competitiveness by bringing together industry, energy, resources and science. Warwick Bowen is an Australian quantum physicist and nanotechnologist at The University of Queensland. He leads the Quantum Optics Laboratory, is Director of the UQ Precision Sensing Initiative and is one of three Theme Leaders of the Australian Centre for Engineered Quantum Systems. Education Bowen attended the University of Otago in New Zealand, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree with Honours in Physics in 1999. He went on to earn a PhD in Physics at the Australian National University in 2004, and was awarded the 2004 Bragg Gold Medal for Excellence in Physics from the Australian Institute of Physics, which recognizes the best PhD thesis in physics by a student from an Australian university. The Australian Research Council (ARC) is the primary non-medical research funding agency of the Australian Government, distributing more than in grants each year. The Council was established by the ''Australian Research Council Act 2001'', and provides competitive research funding to academics and researchers at Australian universities. Most health and medical research in Australia is funded by the more specialised National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), which operates under a separate budget.
