Barry Dock Lifeboat Station
Barry Dock Lifeboat Station is located at the Pierhead Buildings, at Barry Dock Outer Harbour, near the town of Barry, in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales. A lifeboat station was first opened here in 1901 by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). The station currently operates a All-weather lifeboat, named 13-51 ''Richard and Caroline Colton II'' (ON 1358), on station since 2024, and a small Inshore lifeboat, ''Frances Mary Corscadden'' (D-820), on station since 2018. Both boats are moored at a floating pontoon, which can accommodate the tidal range encountered on the Bristol Channel. Barry Docks
Barry Docks ( cy, Dociau'r Barri) is a port facility in the town of Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, a few miles southwest of Cardiff on the north shore of the Bristol Channel. They were opened in 1889 by David Davies and John Cory as an alternative to the congested and expensive Cardiff Docks to ship coal carried by rail from the South Wales Coalfield. The principal engineer was John Wolfe Barry, assisted by Thomas Forster Brown and Henry Marc Brunel, son of the famous engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The docks occupy the former sound between Barry Island and the mainland. The contractors built dams to connect each end of the island to the mainland, drained or pumped the water from the site and excavated it. They used the material to level the area around the docks and for the core of breakwaters to protect the entrance. Since its inception, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has provided Lifeboat (rescue), lifeboats to lifeboat stations in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Once past their operation life, the boats have mostly been sold by the RNLI and purchased for domestic use, marine businesses for usage such as further sea lifesaving functions, diving, fishing and pleasure trips or to maritime lifesaving institutions from other countries to continue a lifesaving role. The term Watson-class lifeboat refers to several wooden lifeboat classes operated by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) around the coasts of the United Kingdom and Ireland between 1888 and 1991.
