Barry (name)
Barry or Berry is both a given name and a surname. The given name can be an Anglicised form of some Irish personal names or shortened form of Barrington, while the surname has numerous etymological origins, and is derived from both place names and personal names. Etymology Of given name The given name ''Barry'' is derived from Gaelic, possibly being an Anglicised form of the personal name ''Báire'', which is a short form of the related Irish names ''Bairrfhionn'' or ''Barrfind'' ("fair-headed", "fair-haired"), and '' Finbar'' or ''Fionnbharr'' ("fair-topped", "fair-haired"). For example, ''Barry'' is sometimes derived from the Irish ''Bairre'', ''Barra'', and ''Barre'', which are in turn forms of the name ''Barrfind''. Furthermore, ''Barry'' is sometimes an Anglicised form of the Irish ''Finnbarr'', which also has short forms of ''Bairre'', ''Barra'', and ''Barre''. Similarly, ''Barry'' is sometimes an Anglicised form of the latter short form ''Barra''. In other cases, ''Ba ... Barry (dog)
Barry der Menschenretter (1800–1814), also known as Barry, was a dog of a breed which was later called the St. Bernard that worked as a mountain rescue dog in Switzerland and Italy for the Great St Bernard Hospice. He predates the modern St. Bernard, and was lighter built than the modern breed. He has been described as the most famous St. Bernard, as he was credited with saving more than 40 lives during his lifetime, hence his byname meaning "people rescuer" in German. The legend surrounding him was that he was killed while attempting a rescue; however, this is untrue. Barry retired to Bern, Switzerland and after his death his body was passed into the care of the Natural History Museum of Bern. His skin has been preserved through taxidermy although his skull was modified in 1923 to match the Saint Bernard of that time period. His story and name have been used in literary works, and a monument to him stands in the Cimetière des Chiens near Paris. At the hospice, one dog has ... Barry (heraldry)
In heraldry, variations of the field are any of a number of ways that a field (or a charge) may be covered with a pattern, rather than a flat tincture or a simple division of the field. Blazoning of French adjectives Variations of the field present a particular problem concerning consistent spelling of adjectival endings in English blazons. Because heraldry developed at a time when English clerks wrote in Anglo-Norman French, many terms in English heraldry are of French origin, as is the practice of placing most adjectives after nouns rather than before. A problem arises as to acceptable spellings of French words used in English blazons, especially in the case of adjectival endings, determined in normal French usage by gender and number. It is considered by some heraldic authorities as pedantry to adopt strictly correct linguistic usage for English blazons: :"To describe two hands as ''appaumées'', because the word ''main'' is feminine in French, savours somewhat of pedantry. It is regarded as the first instance of a music recording completely financed by fans in a then-unique fundraising campaign, 12,674 copies were pre-ordered before the album was even recorded. In an attempt to depart from their neo-progressive rock past for a contemporary sound, Marillion introduced elements of rap, groove, funk, trip hop, blues, jazz and dub. Although the album received several favourable reviews, it was not a significant commercial success, and its sole single, "Between You and Me", did not chart. The group supported ''Anoraknophobia'' with a six-month European tour. Background In February 1997, when Marillion prepared for a European tour in support of their ninth studio album, ''This Strange Engine'', Mark Kelly announced on the Internet that the group would not visit North America due to insufficient support from their American record label, Red Ant.
