Joseph Barrell (1739-1804) was a merchant in Boston, Massachusetts in the 18th century. During the American Revolution he owned ships commissioned as privateers, such as the Vengeance, ca.1779. In 1792 Barrell was "elected to the board" of Massachusetts branch of the newly established Bank of the United States, along with "George Cabot, Jonathan Mason Jr., ... and Fisher Ames." Tony Barrell (broadcaster)
Anthony "Tony" Barrell (7 May 1940 – 31 March 2011) was an English writer and broadcaster who lived in Sydney, Australia. He produced several award-winning radio and television documentaries for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and the BBC World Service, usually with a focus on Asia and particularly Japan. Early life Barrell was born in Cheshire, England in 1940; both his parents and most of his family came from the Suffolk town of Stowmarket. His maternal grandmother, née Florence Laflin, had a family tree linking her through an unbroken line of agricultural labourers to the end of the sixteenth century. He was brought up in the Welsh town of Mold in Flintshire and went to The King's School, Chester in 1951, and then Liverpool University from 1958 to 1961, where he obtained a degree in economics. Sue Barrell
Sue Barrell was Chief Scientist at the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM). In 2013 she was awarded a Fellow of the Academy of Technology and Engineering (FTSE). In 2018, Barrell was elected Vice President of Science and Technology Australia. Amongst other topics, she has worked on international science policy climate monitoring, research and policy, and ocean–earth observations. Barrell was the first female meteorologist to join the senior Executive team of the BoM. She was the first female elected to leadership of a WMO Technical Commission (Vice-President, Commission for Basic Systems) and was one of the early female forecasters. Charles Wisner Barrell (6 July 1885 – 20 June 1974) was an American writer. He first became significant as an art critic, promoting realism. He later built a career as an early exponent of public relations and as a documentary film maker. In his later life he became a prominent supporter of the Oxfordian theory of Shakespeare authorship, making significant contributions to the theory. His claims for the Ashbourne portrait were particularly influential. Career Born in Warwick, New York, Barrell was the son of Charles Wisner Barrell senior and his wife Mary. Barrell established himself as a miscellaneous writer in the early 20th century, publishing verse, essays and criticism. Joseph Barrell
Joseph Barrell (December 15, 1869 – May 4, 1919) was an American geologist who developed many ideas on the origins of the Earth, isostasy and ideas on the origins of sedimentary rocks. He suggested that they were produced by the action of rivers, winds, and ice (continental), as well as by marine sedimentation. He also independently arrived at the theory of stoping as a mechanism for igneous intrusion. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1915. Donald Barrell (born 3 February 1986 in Watford) is a rugby union player for the Bedford Blues in the Aviva Championship. He formerly played for Saracens in the Aviva Premiership. John Barrell
John Charles Barrell FBA FEA (born February 1943) is a British scholar of eighteenth and early nineteenth century studies. Early life John Barrell was born in February 1943. He took his first degree at Trinity College, Cambridge, and his PhD at the University of Essex. Career Barrell was a lecturer in the Department of Literature at Essex for four years from 1968. In 1972 he took up a lectureship in the Faculty of English at Cambridge and a fellowship at King's College, Cambridge. He was appointed to a chair in English at the University of Sussex in 1985 and was Professor of English at the University of York from 1993 to 2012, where he was one of the founders of the Centre for Eighteenth Century Studies. In January 2013 he became Professor of English at Queen Mary, University of London, and, since January 2016, has been Professor Emeritus there. Bernard Clements Barrell (15 August 1919 – 2 January 2005) was an English musician, music educator and composer. Biography Bernard Barrell was born in Sudbury, Suffolk, and studied at Trinity College of Music, London. He served in World War II and returned to England, where he took various teaching appointments in Hollesley Bay Borstal, Ipswich schools, the Suffolk Rural Music School and the Workers’ Educational Association. Charles "Charlie" Abraham Barrell (2 September 1880 – 14 January 1958) was a New Zealand politician of the Labour Party. Biography Early life and career Barrell was born in Rangiora in 1880. Joyce Howard Barrell (née Gedye; 26 November 19176 December 1989) was an English composer. She was born in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England, and was educated at Leicester University, studying with Benjamin Burrows and Harold Craxton for piano and Grace Burrows for violin. After completing her studies, Barrell worked as composer and as a guitar teacher and piano accompanist. She married composer Bernard Barrell, Bernard Clements Barrell in 1945. Francis Barrell (died 1679)
Francis Barrell (c. 1627 – 10 September 1679) was an English lawyer and politician who sat in the House of Commons in 1679. Barrell was the son of a Kentish clergyman and became serjeant at law at Rochester. He was elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Rochester on 16 August 1679 and held the seat until his death later in the year. Barrell was buried in Rochester Cathedral where a monument was erected for him and his wife. Barrell married Anne Somer, daughter of Richard Somer of Clifford's Inn. Anne died in 1707.
