Barraute
Barraute is a municipality in the Canadian province of Quebec, located in the Abitibi Regional County Municipality. It is home to the Mont-Vidéo Ski Resort. History Colonization began after the completion of the National Transcontinental Railway through the Abitibi region. In 1916, the family of Uldéric Hardy arrived, followed by a further 20 in 1917 and, by 1918, the place had a total of some 30 families. The new settlement was initially called Natagan, taken from the Natagan River, a First Nations name that means "winding waters." In 1917, the Natagan River Post Office opened, renamed to Barraute in 1919. In 1918, the United Township Municipality of Fiedmont-et-Barraute was formed, incorporating the geographic townships of Fiedmont and Barraute (proclaimed in 1916). Abitibi-Ouest is a provincial electoral district in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region of Quebec, Canada, that elects members to the National Assembly of Quebec. Val-d'Or (, , ; "Golden Valley" or "Valley of Gold") is a city in Quebec, Canada with a population of 32,752 inhabitants according to the Canada 2021 Census. The city is located in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region near La Vérendrye Wildlife Reserve. History Gold was discovered in the area in 1923. The name of the town is French for "Valley of Gold." While gold is still mined in the area today, base metals, such as copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and lead (Pb) have become increasingly important resources. The ore is usually found in volcanic rocks that were deposited on the sea floor over 2.7 billion years ago. They are referred to as volcanic-hosted (or volcanogenic) massive sulphide deposits ( VMS). Amos, Quebec
Amos is a town in northwestern Quebec, Canada, on the Harricana River. It is the seat of Abitibi Regional County Municipality. Amos is the main town on the Harricana River, and the smallest of the three primary towns — after Rouyn-Noranda and Val-d'Or — in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region of Quebec. Its main resources are spring water, gold and wood products, including paper. In 2012, Quebec Lithium Corp. re-opened Canada's first lithium mine, which had operated as an underground mine from 1955–65. They are planning to carve an open pit mine over pegmatite dikes. (The pegmatite is about 1% lithium carbonate.) The mine is about north of Val-d'Or, southeast of Amos, and km west of Barraute. It is in the northeast corner of La Corne Township. Quebec Lithium Mine
Quebec Lithium Mine was a lithium mine in Quebec, Canada. The deposit was discovered in 1942 by Georges H. Dumont. This mine was located 12 miles west of Barraute and 25 miles north west of Val-D'Or, Quebec. At the beginning, Quebec Lithium had a five-year contract with Lithium Corporation of America for concentrates of Li2O (at 5 and 6%). Lithium Corporation of America was selling back this concentrate to the Atomic Energy Commission. When the United States government ceased to buy lithium, Quebec Lithium became unable to sell its lithium concentrate to Lithium Corporation of America. The company then built its own facilities (in October 1960) to produce lithium carbonate and later on, some lithium hydroxide for domestic usage. La Corne
La Corne is a municipality in the Canadian province of Quebec in Abitibi Regional County Municipality. The place is named in honour of Louis de La Corne (1703–1761), a French naval officer who was wounded in the Battle of Sainte-Foy in 1760. Until 1978, the place name was incorrectly spelled as Lacorne. From 1955 to 1965, La Corne was home to Canada's only lithium mine. The underground mine had a deep shaft and lateral workings on three levels, and provided lithium to the glass and ceramics industries. With the advent of lithium batteries for electric cars and a myriad of consumer electronic products, the mine is currently being studied for reopening in late 2012 as an open-pit mine.
