Barracas is a ''barrio'', or district, in the southeast part of the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is located between the railroad of Ferrocarril General Manuel Belgrano and the Riachuelo River, and the streets ''Regimiento de Patricios'', ''Defensa'', ''Caseros'', ''Vélez Sársfield'', ''Amancio Alcorta'', ''Lafayette'', and ''Lavardén''. The name Barracas comes from the word ''barraca'', which refers to a temporary construction of houses using rudimentary materials. History In the 18th century, "Barracas" began to grow on the banks of the Riachuelo River, becoming a slave quarter, as well as an area for leather tanneries, and abattoirs. On March 24, 1791, a bridge was built that gave the neighborhood an important strategic value during the British invasions of the Río de la Plata. Club Atlético Barracas Central is an Argentine football club from the district of Barracas, Buenos Aires. Established in 1904, Barracas Central will return to the Primera División, the top level of the Argentine football league system, in the 2022 season after the team won the Torneo Reducido. History Foundation and early years Felipe Cámpora, a truck driver, founded Club Atlético Barracas Central on 5 April 1904 under the name "Barracas Central del Sud". Cámpora carried out the project and became the first president of the entity. During the early years of the club's foundation, the founders would each contribute 75¢ cents until 1906 where a monthly fee was paid. In 1911 Barracas joined the Argentine Football Association under the name "Villa Soldati" and began participating in the Argentine football intermediate division. Club Sportivo Barracas is an Argentine sports club from Buenos Aires. The institution was born as a rowing club, nevertheless it is mostly known for its football activities nowadays. The team currently plays in Primera D Metropolitana, the fifth division of the Argentine football league system. The club has also a women's football section. Apart from football, Sportivo Barracas also hosts the practice of futsal, artistic roller skating, and other disciplines. History The club was founded on October 30, 1913, in its headquarters still located in the barrio of Barracas in Buenos Aires, as "Club Sportivo Barracas", after Riachuelo F.C. merged to it. The club bought the Riachuelo F.C. facilities on Iriarte and Santa Elena streets to play football there.
