Barra (Naples)
Barra is an eastern quarter of Naples, southern Italy, with a population of some 40,000 inhabitants (38,103 in the 2001 census.) Barra occupies the easternmost section of the Naples ''comunes territory, ranging from the sea to the Vesuvio's slopes, bounding with Poggioreale. The area has suffered much the same fate of urban decay as the rest of the eastern periphery of Naples, a fate that includes drugs and entrenched organized crime. Historically, it was one of the Vesuvian areas built up under the Bourbons in the 18th century and still displays some structures from that period that have been restored and incorporated into the tourist/cultural itinerary of "Vesuvian Villas". Vesuvio
Mount Vesuvius ( ; it, Vesuvio ; nap, 'O Vesuvio , also or ; la, Vesuvius , also , or ) is a somma-stratovolcano located on the Gulf of Naples in Campania, Italy, about east of Naples and a short distance from the shore. It is one of several volcanoes forming the Campanian volcanic arc. The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis, Stabiae, and several other settlements. Poggioreale
Poggioreale ( Sicilian: ''Poggiuriali'') is a ghost town and ''comune'' in the province of Trapani, western Sicily, southern Italy, located in the Belice The Belice, , is a river of western Sicily. It is about long. From its main source near Piana degli Albanesi it runs south and west for as the Belice Destro ("right Belice") until it is joined near Poggioreale by its secondary branch, the Be ... valley. The Economy was mostly based on agriculture and fruit cultivation. Earthquake: The Belice Valley earthquake destroyed the entire town of Poggioreale and killed 200 people in 1968. Eventually the town was rebuilt in a safer place a few kilometers south. Some of the families moved to the USA, according to a CNN article. Mayor Girolamo Cangelosi wants to bring Poggioreale back to its former glory. Some of the former residents and their families have been on organized tours of Poggioreale.
