Baron Ribblesdale
Baron Ribblesdale, of Gisburne Park in the County of York, was a title in the Peerage of Great Britain. It was created on 26 October 1797 for Thomas Lister, the former Member of Parliament for Clitheroe. His great-grandson (the title having descended from father to son), the fourth Baron, was a Liberal politician and served as Master of the Buckhounds from 1892 to 1895. He had no surviving male issue (both his sons were killed in action) and on his death on 21 October 1925 the barony became extinct. Gisburne Park was sold after the death of his sisters. The first Baron's father, Thomas Lister, grandfather, Thomas Lister, and uncle, Nathaniel Lister (of Armitage Park, Staffordshire), also represented Clitheroe in the House of Commons. Thomas Lister, 2nd Baron Ribblesdale
Thomas Lister, 2nd Baron Ribblesdale (23 January 1790 – 10 December 1832) was an English Peer of the Realm. Lister was the son of Thomas Lister, 1st Baron Ribblesdale, and Rebecca Feilding. He attended Westminster School from 1800 to 1804 and matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford on 2 November 1807. In February 1826 he married his second cousin, Adelaide, the daughter of Thomas Lister (1772β1828) of Armitage Park, Staffordshire. They had four children: Thomas, born 1828; Adelaide, born 1827; Isabel, born 1830; and Elizabeth, born 1833 (after Lister had died). He succeeded to the barony on 22 September 1826 following the death of his father. He resided at the family estate of Gisburne Park. Thomas Lister, 3rd Baron Ribblesdale
Thomas Lister, 3rd Baron Ribblesdale (28 April 1828 – 25 August 1876) was an English Peer of the Realm. Lister was the only son of Thomas Lister, 2nd Baron Ribblesdale and Adelaide, the daughter of Thomas Lister (1772β1828). He was born at Armitage Park, Staffordshire. He succeeded to the barony in 1832 following his father's death: at just four years old he was the youngest Peer of the Realm. His mother remarried in 1835 to John Russell, 1st Earl Russell (the future Prime Minister); but she died in November 1838 shortly after giving birth. Lister and his sisters lived with Earl Russell and his new wife, Fanny, at 37 Chesham Place, London. Lister mainly received private tuition but did study for a time at Eton. Thomas Henry Lister
Thomas Henry Lister (1800 β 5 June 1842) was an English novelist and biographer, and served as Registrar General in the British civil service. He was an early exponent of the silver fork novel as a genre and also presaged "futuristic" writing in one of his stories. Life and writings Lister was the son of Thomas Lister of Armitage Park, Staffordshire, and his first wife Harriet Anne Seale. His maternal grandfather was John Seale. Ribblesdale Escutcheon
Ribblesdale is one of the Yorkshire Dales in England. It is the dale or upper valley of the River Ribble in North Yorkshire. Towns and villages in Ribblesdale (downstream, from north to south) include Selside, Horton-in-Ribblesdale, Stainforth, Langcliffe, Giggleswick, Settle, Long Preston and Hellifield. Below Hellifield (sometimes below Settle) the valley of the river is generally known as the Ribble Valley. Above Settle the dale is within the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It is a popular tourist area, particularly for walking. The Yorkshire Three Peaks rise to the east and west of the dale. The Ribble Way runs the length of the dale. At the head of the dale is the Ribblehead Viaduct, crossed by the Settle to Carlisle railway which runs through the dale. A coronet is a small crown consisting of ornaments fixed on a metal ring. A coronet differs from other kinds of crowns in that a coronet never has arches, and from a tiara in that a coronet completely encircles the head, while a tiara does not. Thomas Lister, 4th Baron Ribblesdale (29 October 1854 β 21 October 1925) was a British Liberal politician. Early life Thomas Lister was born on 29 October 1854 in Fontainebleau, France, the eldest son of Thomas Lister, 3rd Baron Ribblesdale (1828β1876), and his wife Emma (''nΓ©e'' Mure) (1833β1911), daughter of William Mure. He succeeded his father in the barony in 1876. Career Lord Ribblesdale sat on the Liberal benches in the House of Lords and served as a Lord-in-waiting (government whip in the House of Lords) under William Ewart Gladstone from 1880 to 1885 and in 1886 and as Master of the Buckhounds under Gladstone and later Lord Rosebery from 1892 to 1895. Apart from his political career he was also a Captain in the Rifle Brigade and a Trustee of the National Gallery from 1909 to 1925. Sir Reginald Lister
Sir Reginald Lister, (1865β1912) was a British diplomat. Lister was the third son of Thomas Lister, 3rd Baron Ribblesdale. He was Second secretary at the British Embassy in Paris until September 1902, when he was appointed Secretary of Legation in Copenhagen, Denmark. He transferred to the British embassy in Italy in 1904 with a promotion to Counsellor. He served the same role in Paris under Sir Francis Bertie from 1905.
