Baron Mordaunt
The title Baron Mordaunt was created in 1529 for Sir John Mordaunt. The fifth baron was created Earl of Peterborough in 1628 and the title then passed to his son, the second earl, in 1644. On his death in 1697, the earldom was inherited by his nephew, Charles and the barony was inherited by his only child, Mary, the estranged wife of the 7th Duke of Norfolk. When she died childless in 1705, the barony was also inherited by Charles, who had also been created Earl of Monmouth. On the death of the 5th Earl of Peterborough in 1814, the title passed to his elder half-sister, Mary. When she died childless in 1819, the title then passed to the 4th Duke of Gordon, who was a maternal great-grandson of the 3rd Earl of Peterborough. John Mordaunt, 2nd Baron Mordaunt
John Mordaunt, 2nd Baron Mordaunt (1508–1571) was an English baron and member of the House of Lords. He had previously represented Bedfordshire in the House of Commons of England. He was the eldest son of John Mordaunt, 1st Baron Mordaunt of Turvey by Elizabeth, the daughter and coheiress of Sir Henry Vere of Great Addington, Northamptonshire. He was knighted in 1533 and inherited the title Baron Mordaunt on his father's death in 1562. He was appointed High Sheriff of Essex and High Sheriff of Hertfordshire for 1540–41 and Constable of Hertford Castle from 1554. He served as a Privy Councillor (PC) from 1553. He was elected MP for Bedfordshire in 1553, April and November 1554 and 1555. He died in 1571 and was buried at Turvey. John Mordaunt, 1st Baron Mordaunt
John Mordaunt, 1st Baron Mordaunt (died 18 August 1562) was an English politician and peer. He was the son of John Mordaunt of Turvey, Bedfordshire, who was a member of parliament and speaker of the House of Commons of England. He was admitted to the Middle Temple in 1503 to be trained as a barrister. He was made a Knight of the Bath when the future Henry VIII was created Prince of Wales on 18 February 1503. He succeeded his father in 1504, inheriting his Bedfordshire estates, and was appointed High Sheriff of Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire for 1509. He was a member of Henry VIII's court and was with him at the Field of the Cloth of Gold in 1520 and a member of his council in 1526 and was created Baron Mordaunt in 1529. He took his seat in the House of Lords in 1532. The following year he assisted at the reception of Anne Boleyn and subsequently took part in her trial. Sir John Wriothesley Russell (22 August 1914 – 3 August 1984) was a British diplomat and ambassador. He was the only son of Thomas Wentworth Russell, better known as Russell Pasha, who was descended from John Russell, 6th Duke of Bedford. He was educated at Eton College and graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1935 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.). He was part of the British Embassy in Moscow in 1941 and in 1956, also with a M.A. degree, after which he was awarded a CMG in the 1958 Birthday Honours. Henry Mordaunt, 4th Baron Mordaunt (died 1608) was an English landowner involved in the Gunpowder Plot. He was the son of Lewis Mordaunt, 3rd Baron Mordaunt and Elizabeth Darcy. The family house was Drayton House. Mordaunt was at Apethorpe with a welcoming party for James VI and I in April 1603. While he was there he discussed plans to cut timber in Brigstock park. There were riots at Brigstock in May and Mordaunt went to read a royal proclamation to restore order. Francis Tresham, later a Gunpowder plot conspirator, was involved in the controversy at Brigstock. He entertained King James and Anne of Denmark at his house at Drayton, Northamptonshire, with musicians and singers in August 1605. The queen's secretary, William Fowler, was also present. Mordaunt was imprisoned in the Tower of London on suspicion of complicity in the Gunpowder Plot, for his correspondence with Everard Digby. Lewis Mordaunt, 3rd Baron Mordaunt (21 September 1538 – 16 June 1601) was an English peer and politician. He was the son of John Mordaunt, 2nd Baron Mordaunt and Ela (née FitzLewis) Mordaunt. He became the third Baron Mordaunt in 1571 on the death of his father. He was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bedfordshire (1563–67) and High Sheriff of Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire in 1570. A lover of art and buildings, he was a reluctant judge at the trial of Mary, Queen of Scots, beheaded in 1587, with whose death sentence he did 'most unwillingly concur'. He commanded troops recruited to resist when it was thought that the Spanish Armada would invade in 1588. Georgiana Russell, Duchess of Bedford (18 July 1781 – 24 February 1853), formerly Lady Georgiana Gordon, was a British aristocrat, patron of the arts and wife of John Russell, 6th Duke of Bedford. Georgiana was born at Gordon Castle in Scotland, a younger daughter of Alexander Gordon, 4th Duke of Gordon, and his first wife, Jane. In 1802, after the Treaty of Amiens, the Duchess of Gordon took Georgiana to Paris to pursue the option of a marriage with Eugène de Beauharnais, stepson of Napoleon, who was around her own age, but political sensitivities put an end to the plan.
