Baron Marney
Baron Marney (or Baron Marny) was a title in the Peerage of England. It was created in 1523 for Sir Henry Marney. The title became extinct on the death of his son, the second Baron, in 1525. Peerage Of England
The Peerage of England comprises all peerages created in the Kingdom of England before the Act of Union in 1707. In that year, the Peerages of England and Scotland were replaced by one Peerage of Great Britain. There are five peerages in the United Kingdom in total. English Peeresses obtained their first seats in the House of Lords under the Peerage Act 1963 from which date until the passage of the House of Lords Act 1999 all Peers of England could sit in the House of Lords. The ranks of the English peerage are, in descending order, duke, marquess, earl, viscount, and baron. While most newer English peerages descend only in the male line, many of the older ones (particularly older baronies) can descend through females. Such peerages follow the old English inheritance law of moieties so all daughters (or granddaughters through the same root) stand as co-heirs, so some such titles are in such a state of abeyance between these. Henry Marney, 1st Baron Marney
Henry Marney, 1st Baron Marney KG (c. 1447 – 4 May 1523) of Layer Marney, Essex was a politician of the Tudor period in England. He was a favourite of Henry VIII and captain of his guard. Life He was the son of John Marney and his wife Joan Throgmorton. He rose to favour in the Royal household of King Henry VII during the battles of Bosworth and Stoke and following the rout of Perkin Warbeck in 1497. He was appointed to the Privy Council. When King Henry VIII acceded to the Throne in 1509 Marney was made a Knight of the Garter and honoured with a tranche of public offices, including Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Lord Privy Seal, Vice-Chamberlain of the Household, Warden of the Stannaries and Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard. Along with the other Knights of the Garter he accompanied Henry VIII in 1520 to his meeting with Francis I of France at the Field of the Cloth of Gold. John Marney, 2nd Baron Marney
John Marney, 2nd Baron Marney (by 1485 – 27 April 1525) of Layer Marney, Essex was an English Member of Parliament and Governor of Rochester Castle. He was the son of Henry Marney, 1st Baron Marney of Layer Marney and educated in the law at Lincoln's Inn. He succeeded his father in 1523 to the barony and his unfinished house of Layer Marney Tower. He was appointed keeper of Rochester Castle, Kent for life on 18 May 1509. He served under his father in the French campaign of 1513 and was present at Henry VIII’s meetings with the French King at the Field of Cloth of Gold.
