Baron Athlumney
Baron Athlumney, of Somerville and Dollarstown in the County of Meath, was a title in the Peerage of Ireland. It was created in 1863 for the Liberal politician Sir William Meredyth Somerville, 5th Baronet, who had previously served as Chief Secretary for Ireland. In 1866 he was also created Baron Meredyth, of Dollardstown in the County of Meath, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. He was succeeded by his eldest and only surviving son from his second marriage, the second Baron. He was childless and on his death in 1929 the baronies became extinct while the baronetcy became dormant. The Baronetcy, of Somerville in the County of Meath, was created in the Baronetage of Ireland in 1748 for James Somerville, who had earlier served as Lord Mayor of Dublin. His great-grandson, the fourth Baronet (the title having descended from father to son), represented County Meath in both the Irish and British Parliaments. County Meath
County Meath (; gle, Contae na Mí or simply ) is a county in the Eastern and Midland Region of Ireland, within the province of Leinster. It is bordered by Dublin to the southeast, Louth to the northeast, Kildare to the south, Offaly to the southwest, Westmeath to the west, Cavan to the northwest, and Monaghan to the north. To the east, Meath also borders the Irish Sea along a narrow strip between the rivers Boyne and Delvin, giving it the second shortest coastline of any county. Meath County Council is the local authority for the county. Meath is the 14th-largest of Ireland's 32 traditional counties by land area, and the 8th-most populous, with a total population of 220,296 according to the 2022 census. The county town and largest settlement in Meath is Navan, located in the centre of the county along the River Boyne. Sir Richard Gorges-Meredyth, 1st Baronet (7 May 1735 – September 1821) was an Anglo-Irish politician and baronet. Born Richard Gorges, son and heir of Hamilton Gorges, MP for Swords. On his marriage in 1775 to Mary, daughter and heir of Arthur Meredyth, he assumed the additional name of Meredyth before that of Gorges.George E Cockayne, The Complete Baronetage Vol V. Page 424. James Herbert Gustavus Meredyth Somerville, 2nd Baron Athlumney, 2nd Baron Meredyth (23 March 1865 – 8 January 1929) was an Irish peer and officer of the British Army. Early life and background He was the son of William Meredyth Somerville, 1st Baron Athlumney and Maria Georgiana Elizabeth Jones, was baptised on 25 April 1865 at Kentstown, County Meath, Ireland, and was educated at Harrow School, Harrow on the Hill, London, England. He succeeded to his family's titles on the death of his father, the first Baron Athlumney, on 7 December 1873. He sat in the House of Lords as Baron Meredyth (a UK barony created in 1866 - the barony of Athlumney being Irish). Military career Lord Athlumney served firstly in the Prince of Wales's Leinster Regiment (Royal Canadians), before being made extra ADC to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (Earl Cadogan). Sir Marcus Somerville, 4th Baronet (1772 – 11 July 1831) was an Anglo-Irish politician. Somerville was the son of Sir James Quaile Somerville, 3rd Baronet and Catherine Crofton. The Peerage of Ireland consists of those titles of nobility created by the English monarchs in their capacity as Lord or King of Ireland, or later by monarchs of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
