Baron Arundell Of Wardour
Baron Arundell of Wardour, in the County of Wiltshire, was a title in the Peerage of England. It was created in 1605 for Thomas Arundell, known as "Thomas the Valiant", son of Sir Matthew Arundell (died 1598) and grandson of Sir Thomas Arundell (executed 1552) and of Margaret Howard, a sister of Queen Catherine Howard. Arundell had already been created a Count of the Holy Roman Empire by Rudolph II in December 1595 (see below). He was succeeded by his son, the second Baron. He fought as a Royalist in the Civil War and was mortally wounded at the Battle of Stratton in 1643. His son, the third Baron, was implicated in the Popish Plot and imprisoned in the Tower of London for six years. James Everard Arundell, 10th Baron Arundell of Wardour (3 November 1785 – 21 June 1834), styled The Honourable James Arundell between 1808 and 1817, was an English peer. Arundell was born at Clifford Street, St. James's, London, the son of James Everard Arundell, 9th Baron of Arundell of Wardour, by his first wife the Honourable Mary Christina Arundell, daughter of Henry Arundell, 8th Baron Arundell of Wardour. Henry Arundell, 8th Baron Arundell of Wardour (31 March 1740 – 4 December 1808) was a British nobleman in the 18th century. He married Mary Christina Conquest, in 1763. Biography Henry Arundell was born on 31 March 1740, to Henry Arundell and Mary Bellings-Arundell. He married Mary Christina Conquest, the daughter of Benedict Conquest of Irnham Hall and Mary Ursula Markham, on 31 May 1763. They had a London home in Grosvenor Square. They had two daughters: Mary Christina (1764–1805), who married James Everard Arundell, 9th Baron Arundell of Wardour, and Eleanor Mary (1766–1835), who married Charles Clifford, 6th Baron Clifford of Chudleigh. An avid collector of art, he accumulated immense debts in building and furnishing New Wardour Castle, Wiltshire, designed in the Palladian style by Giacomo Quarenghi. Henry Arundell, 3rd Baron Arundell of Wardour, PC (bef. 23 February 1607/828 December 1694) was a Peer of England during the 17th century, and the most famous of the Lords Arundell of Wardour. He served as Lord Privy Seal and Lord High Steward, and was appointed to the Privy Council. During the Popish Plot he suffered a long period of imprisonment, although he was never brought to trial. Early life He was baptised on 23 February 1607/8 at St Andrew, Holborn, London. On the death of his father, who had been mortally wounded at the Battle of Stratton, on 19 May 1643 he succeeded to his estates and to his titles, which included that of Count of the Holy Roman Empire. Throughout his life a devoted Roman Catholic, he fought like his father on the side of Charles I in the First English Civil War. Thomas Arundell, 2nd Baron Arundell of Wardour ( – 19 May 1643) was an England, English nobleman son of Thomas Arundell, 1st Baron Arundell of Wardour and Lady Mary Wriothesley. Life He succeeded to the title of 2nd Baron Arundell of Wardour, Wiltshire, County Wiltshire, on 7 November 1639. He was a devoted Royalist and joined the Royalist cause during the English Civil War, having raised a Regiment of Horse for the King. He was present at the Royalist victory at the Battle of Stratton (16 May 1643), but was mortally wounded in the engagement, and died three days later in Oxford, Oxfordshire, from the wounds received in action. His residence, Wardour Castle in Wiltshire, whose defence he had been compelled to leave in the hands of his wife, had fallen to the Parliamentarians on 8 May 1643.
