Barnes Hospital, on South Worple Way, East Sheen,} in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, is a hospital managed by South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust. It provides community and inpatient mental health services. The hospital was opened in 1889 as The Barnes Isolation Hospital. Its original purpose was to treat and care for patients with infectious diseases such as diphtheria and scarlet fever. The existing buildings were extensively renovated in 2001 when a new extension was added. Half of the hospital's site was sold to a residential developer in 2019. East Sheen
East Sheen, also known as Sheen, is a suburb in south-west London in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. Its long high street has shops, offices, restaurants, cafés, pubs and suburban supermarkets and is also the economic hub for Mortlake of which East Sheen was once a manor. This commercial thoroughfare, well served by public transport, is the Upper Richmond Road West which connects Richmond to Putney. Central to this street is ''The Triangle'', a traffic island with a war memorial and an old milestone dating from 1751, marking the distance to Cornhill in the City of London. Diphtheria is an infection caused by the bacterium '' Corynebacterium diphtheriae''. Most infections are asymptomatic or have a mild clinical course, but in some outbreaks more than 10% of those diagnosed with the disease may die. Scarlet fever, also known as Scarlatina, is an infectious disease caused by ''Streptococcus pyogenes'' a Group A streptococcus (GAS). The infection is a type of Group A streptococcal infection (Group A strep). It most commonly affects children between five and 15 years of age. The signs and symptoms include a sore throat, fever, headache, swollen lymph nodes, and a characteristic rash. The face is flushed and the rash is red and blanching.
