Barlanark
Barlanark ( ) is a district in the Scottish city of Glasgow. It is situated east of Budhill, Shettleston and Springboig, north west of Baillieston, west of Springhill and Swinton and south of Easthall, Easterhouse and Wellhouse. Name The name Barlanark is an apparently hybrid Gaelic- Brythonic name suggesting ''the hill at the clearing'' from the Gaelic ''bàrr'' and Brythonic ''lanerc'' meaning "clearing". The first element may represent a Gaelicisation of Brythonic ''*baɣeδ'', 'boar' ( Welsh ''baedd''). History Barlanark housing scheme was developed in response to the city's grave post-war housing needs: In 1952/53 over 2,300 3- and 4-bedroom apartments were constructed and rented out to 'Corporation' tenants. There were also 5-apartment semi-detached houses, and 3-apartment terraced houses built, next to the Estate of Barlanark House, which was constructed by David Hamilton in 1822, demolished in 1954 (a playpark now stands on the site). Wellhouse
Wellhouse is a residential neighbourhood in the East End of the Scottish city of Glasgow. Since 2007 it has been part of the Baillieston administrative ward within the Glasgow City Council area. Location and history Wellhouse consists primarily of council tenements dating from the time the 'scheme' was laid out in the late 1950s and which were refurbished in the early 21st century, as well as some modern houses built to replace other tenements which were knocked down. There are two primary schools (Aultmore Park Primary and Newhills SEN School), a row of shops, a youth facility with children’s play area and a modern community centre in the centre of the neighbourhood. There are also areas of waste ground where buildings (including a church and a previous school) were demolished but the land remains unused. Springboig
Springboig is a neighbourhood in the east end of the Scottish city of Glasgow, situated north of the River Clyde. Administratively, it has been within the city's East Centre ward since 2017, having previously been in the Baillieston ward. Springboig is bordered to the south by Shettleston and Budhill, to the east by Barlanark and Sandymount Cemetery, directly to the west by Greenfield with Carntyne, St Andrews Secondary School, Lightburn Hospital and Greenfield Park beyond, and to the north by the Edinburgh Road (A8), with Cranhill and Queenslie on the opposite side of the carriageways. Easthall
Easthall is a residential neighbourhood in the East End of the Scottish city of Glasgow. Since 2007 Glasgow City Council election, 2007 it has been part of the Baillieston (ward), Baillieston administrative ward within the Glasgow City Council area. Location and amenities Easthall was constructed in the 1950s as a housing estate, council housing scheme as part of 'Greater Easterhouse' (taking its name from the nearby ''East Hallhill Farm'' which no longer exists) although it is physically separated from the Easterhouse, main Easterhouse scheme and its amenities by the M8 motorway (Scotland), M8 Motorway; both Easterhouse and Easthall are served by Junction 10 of the motorway which is also the exit for the Glasgow Fort shopping centre. Easterhouse
Easterhouse is a suburb of Glasgow, Scotland, east of the city centre on land gained from the county of Lanarkshire as part of an expansion of Glasgow before the Second World War. The area is on high ground north of the River Clyde and south of the River Kelvin and Campsie Fells. Building began in the mid-1950s to provide better housing for people in the East End living in sub-standard conditions. At the 2001 Census, its population was 26,495. Neighbourhoods of Easterhouse include Provanhall, Kildermorie, Lochend, Rogerfield and Commonhead, as well as Wellhouse, Easthall and Queenslie which are separated from the other parts by the M8 motorway running east–west through the area. Springhill, Glasgow
Springhill is a district in the Scottish city of Glasgow. It is situated north of the River Clyde on the eastern edge of the city, north of the areas of Baillieston and Garrowhill and west of Swinton. Springhill consists mainly of semi-detached and detached family houses built in the 1990s, as well as ''Glasgow Business Park'', a partly-completed industrial and commercial estate near to the neighbourhoods of Barlanark and Easthall, which features the local DVSA driving test centre and a 4-metre high landmark wire sculpture of a Clydesdale Horse by Andy Scott, who has other works on display in the vicinity - a phoenix in Easterhouse and a group of sirens at the water tower in Cranhill. Danny McGrain (footballer, Born 1953)
Daniel McGrain (27 May 1953 – 30 August 2004) was a Scottish footballer who spent his entire senior career with Clyde. Career Born in the Barlanark area of Glasgow, McGrain began his career with junior side Blantyre Victoria, winning the Scottish Junior Cup with them in 1970. He signed for Clyde in 1971, and made his debut against Aberdeen in a Scottish League Cup tie in August of that year. McGrain was appointed Clyde captain the following season whilst only nineteen years of age, making him the youngest Clyde captain ever, a record which he holds to this day. In a game against Dundee United in February 1974, McGrain headed the ball off the line, sustaining an injury. He collapsed in the dressing room after the game, and was rushed to hospital with suspected brain damage. McGrain was forced to retire through injury at the start of the 1975–76 season, after playing 109 matches for the club in all competitions. Glasgow East is a constituency of the House of Commons of the UK Parliament, located in the city of Glasgow, Scotland. It elects one Member of Parliament at least once every five years using the first-past-the-post system of voting. Graham Dorrans
Graham Dorrans (born 5 May 1987) is a Scottish professional footballer who plays as a midfielder. He began his football career at Scottish club Livingston, before joining English club West Bromwich Albion in 2008. In the 2009–10 season, he helped West Bromwich Albion gain promotion to the Premier League and was named in the Championship Team of the Year in the process. He signed for Norwich City in 2015, and then moved to Rangers in 2017. After a couple of years there mired by injury issues, he regained his fitness with Dundee before moving to Western Sydney Wanderers in 2020. Dorrans would return to Scotland the following year, signing with Dunfermline Athletic. Dorrans has represented Scotland at under-20, under-21, and senior levels. Baillieston
Baillieston ( sco, Bailiestoun) is a suburb of Glasgow, Scotland. It is about east of the city centre. It also gives its name to Ward 20 of Glasgow City Council and forms part of the Glasgow East constituency of the UK Parliament. Geographical position Once a separate village, Baillieston is now on the periphery of the Glasgow urban area, situated west of a major interchange between the M8, M74 and M73 motorways and the A8 trunk road, between the town of Coatbridge in North Lanarkshire, and the neighbouring Glasgow neighbourhoods of Sandyhills, Barlanark and Mount Vernon. Stephen Dobbie
Stephen Dobbie (born 5 December 1982) is a Scottish former professional footballer. He is Senior Professional Development Phase coach at his former club Blackpool. Dobbie is Queen of the South's second-highest goalscorer of all time (166 goals) and the club's record scorer for a single season (43 goals in the 2018-19 season). He started his career in the 2002–03 season at Rangers, followed by spells at Hibernian and St Johnstone.
