Nasreen Jahan Ratna
Nasreen Jahan Ratna (born 8 August 1963) is a Bangladesh Jaitya Party politician and former Member of Bangladesh Parliament from Barisal-6. Biography Ratna was educated at home and did not receive formal education. She is from Barisal City. She was elected chairperson of Bakerganj municipality in May 2004. Her nomination from Barisal-6 was cancelled by the Bangladesh Election Commission for the elections scheduled to take place in 2006. She appealed the decision of the commission on 20 December 2006. Hossain Mohammad Ershad, the chairman of the Jatiya Party, selected her for the Jatiya Party candidate for the general election. Background The current Sangsad ( 11th) is scheduled to expire on 29 January 2024, as the first session of this parliament sat on 30 January 2019 and the tenure of a parliament lasts five years. The Awami League won the 2018 general elections and formed the government. Incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has hinted she does not intend to lead her party, the Awami League, into another election. Electoral system The 350 members of the Jatiya Sangsad consist of 300 directly elected seats using first-past-the-post voting in single-member constituencies, and an additional 50 seats reserved for women. 2018 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 30 December 2018 to elect 300 directly-elected members of the Jatiya Sangsad. The result was a landslide victory for the Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina. According to political scientist Ali Riaz, the elections were not free and fair. Jatiya Sangsad
The Jatiya Sangsad ( bn, জাতীয় সংসদ, lit=National Parliament, translit=Jatiyô Sôngsôd), often referred to simply as the ''Sangsad'' or JS and also known as the House of the Nation, is the supreme legislative body of Bangladesh. The current parliament of Bangladesh contains 350 seats, including 50 seats reserved exclusively for women. Elected occupants are called Member of Parliament, or MP.
