Baris In Hellesponto
Baris ( grc, Βάρις), called Baris in Hellesponto to distinguish it from other places called Baris, was an ancient city and bishopric in Asia Minor, which remains a Catholic titular see. History Baris was located in the Troas part of Mysia, in the area of the modern Sarïköy and Biga in Anatolia. It was important enough in the Late Roman Province of Hellespont(us) to be a suffragan see of its capital Cyzicus's Metropolitan Archbishopric, in the sway of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, but, like many cities, declined during Late Antiquity. Its site is located near Gönen in Asiatic Turkey. Residential Ordinaries Two of its incumbent Bishops are recorded for certain: * Eutichianus, in whose name Metropolitan Diogenes of Cyzicus signed at the Council of Chalcedon (451) * Domninus, who in 458 signed the letter of the bishops of the Hellespont province to Byzantine Emperor Leo I the Thracian after the lynching by Coptic mobs of Patriarch Proterius of Alexandria. Hasmonean Baris
The Hasmonean Baris was a citadel constructed north of Jerusalem's Temple Mount in existence during the Hasmonean period. History Nehemiah refers to a "birah" on or adjacent to the Temple Mount. This may have been the predecessor or identical to the Hellenistic fortress mentioned in the Letter of Aristeas. It is unclear whether this structure was demolished under the Seleucids or during the Maccabean revolt. The Baris was rebuilt or repurposed as a fortress-residence under the Hasmoneans during the late 2nd century BCE. Little is known of its form except that it was rectangular and possessed several high towers, one of which was known as "Straton's Tower". The High Priest resided in the Baris, and Josephus reports that Hyrcanus I spent more time in it than at the Hasmonean palace in Jerusalem's upper city. The Baris was connected to the Temple Mount by an underground passageway and also housed the sacred vestments worn by the High Priest. The Baris was besieged by Pompey ...

Baris (dance)
''Baris'' dance ( ban, ᬩᬭᬶᬲ᭄) is a family of traditional war dances in Bali, Indonesia, accompanied by gamelan, in which dancers depict the feelings of a young warrior prior to battle, glorify the manhood of the triumphant Balinese warrior, and display the sublimity of his commanding presence. ''Baris'' derives its name from the word ''bebarisan'', which literally means "line" or "file formation", referring to the soldiers who served the ancient rajas of Bali. Performance There are two main types of ''baris'' dance which can be found throughout the island of Bali. The non-ritual dance is performed by a solo male dancer, and is often the first dance that a budding dancer learns. However, there are over thirty different types of ritual ''baris'' dances, each of which is performed by a group of people, still imitating the movements of the warrior. ''Baris tunggal'' A ''baris tunggal'' dancer, namely a ''baris'' dancer who performs on his own, is dressed in white leggings ...

Baris (ship)
A baris ( grc, βᾶρις, cop, ⲃⲁⲁⲣⲉ ) is a type of ancient Egyptian ship, whose unique method of construction was described by Herodotus, writing in about . Archeologists and historians could find no corroboration of his description until the discovery of the remains of such a ship in the waters around Thonis-Heracleion in Aboukir Bay in 2003. The ship, known as Ship 17, the first of 63 ships found in Thonis-Heraclion, measures up to 28 metres in length. It was constructed using an unusual technique to join thick wooden planks together, and had a distinctive steering mechanism with an axial rudder passing through the hull. The underwater archaeological work was carried out by Franck Goddio and the European Institute for Underwater Archaeology, and the findings are being published in a book by Alexander Belov for the Oxford Centre for Maritime Archaeology The Oxford Centre for Maritime Archaeology (OCMA) is a specialist research group within the School of Archaeol ...
