Barguna-1 is a constituency represented in the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) of Bangladesh since 2008 by Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu of the Awami League. Boundaries The constituency encompasses Amtali Upazila, Amtali, Barguna Sadar Upazila, Barguna Sadar, and Taltali Upazila, Taltali upazilas. History The constituency was created in 1984 from a Patuakhali constituency when the former Patuakhali District was split into two districts: Barguna District, Barguna and Patuakhali District, Patuakhali. Ahead of the 2008 Bangladeshi general election, 2008 general election, the Bangladesh Election Commission, Election Commission redrew constituency boundaries to reflect population changes revealed by the 2001 Bangladesh census. Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu (born 14 December 1948) is a Bangladesh Awami League politician and the incumbent Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Barguna-1 constituency. Early life Shambhu was born 14 December 1948. He has a law degree and a M.A. degree. Barguna ( bn, বরগুনা ''Borguna'') is a district in the Barisal Division, division of Barisal, Bangladesh. It is situated in the southern part of Bangladesh. Barguna subdivision was established in 1969 and promoted to district on 28 February 1984. History Barguna district was in the Sundarbans, Sundarban area. In the evolution of time, people started clearing the forest by cutting down the trees and started to live here. Wood merchants used to come here to collect woods from the forest. Etymology There is not enough strong proof of naming the district. 2018 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 30 December 2018 to elect 300 directly-elected members of the Jatiya Sangsad. The result was a landslide victory for the Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina. According to political scientist Ali Riaz, the elections were not free and fair. Barguna Sadar Upazila
Barguna Sadar ( bn, বরগুনা সদর) is an upazila of Barguna District in the Division of Barisal, Bangladesh. Geography Barguna Sadar is located at . It has 41868 households and a total area of 454.39 km2. History In 1904, a thana (police outpost headquarters) was founded in Barguna. During the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, many people were murdered in Barguna town as well as the Bengali freedom fighters when retreating. 100 prisoners at the Barguna Jail were killed by the Pakistan Army on 29 and 30 November and they were later buried in a mass grave to the west of the Jail. By 3 December, Barguna had been liberated. The Jatiya Sangsad ( bn, জাতীয় সংসদ, lit=National Parliament, translit=Jatiyô Sôngsôd), often referred to simply as the ''Sangsad'' or JS and also known as the House of the Nation, is the supreme legislative body of Bangladesh.
