Barbara Gaardlykke Apol (born 27 April 1995) is Faroese politician and former president of the Nordic Council's organization for youth wing parties, Nordic Youth Council (Danish: ''Ungdommens Nordiske Råd''). Political career Between 2015 and 2017 Apol was the leader of the Socialist Youth. In 2019 Apol announced her ambitions of running for the Folketing. She successfully ran in the 2019 election, receiving 392 votes. This was the third-most votes received of the candidates from the Social Democratic Party. Apol became a temporary member of the Folketing in 2020, from March 17 to March 24, substituting for Sjúrður Skaale Sjúrður Skaale (born 8 March 1967 in Tórshavn) is a Faroese politician, journalist, actor, singer, and comedian. Nordic Youth Council
The Nordic Youth Council ( Scandinavian: ''Ungdommens Nordiske Råd''), abbreviated UNR, is a forum organization of the Nordic Council. It consists of the member countries' youth wing parties. History The youth wing parties of the Nordic Council have, since the council's foundation in 1952, held independent seminars before the Nordic Council's sessions. The purpose of the seminar was to discuss the subjects on the council's agenda. In the late 1960s it was discussed to create an independent organization for the youth wing parties. A trial session was held in Stockholm in 1971. Creating the UNR as an independent organization was dismissed, but the yearly seminars continued. During the 70s and 80s UNR continued with yearly seminars. UNR was first able to influence the Nordic Council's session in 1987, where they were given opportunity to present the results from the seminar. Sjúrður Skaale (born 8 March 1967 in Tórshavn) is a Faroese politician, journalist, actor, singer, and comedian. He is a member of the Folketing for the Social Democratic Party. From 2008 to 2011 he was a member of the Løgting. Background He took his examen artium at Føroya Studentaskúli og HF-skeið in 1987, and obtained his Cand.polit. after studying political science in Copenhagen and Madrid. He also studied Spanish in Colombia and Copenhagen. Folketing
The Folketing ( da, Folketinget, ; ), also known as the Parliament of Denmark or the Danish Parliament in English, is the unicameral national legislature (parliament) of the Kingdom of Denmark—Denmark proper together with the Faroe Islands and Greenland. Established in 1849, until 1953 the Folketing was the lower house of a bicameral parliament, called the Rigsdag; the upper house was Landstinget. It meets in Christiansborg Palace, on the islet of Slotsholmen in central Copenhagen. The Folketing passes all laws, approves the cabinet, and supervises the work of the government. It is also responsible for adopting the state's budgets and approving the state's accounts. As set out in the Constitution of Denmark, the Folketing shares power with the reigning monarch. Tórshavn
Tórshavn (; lit. "Thor's harbour"), usually locally referred to as simply ''Havn'', is the capital and largest city of the Faroe Islands. It is located in the southern part on the east coast of Streymoy. To the northwest of the city lies the mountain Húsareyn, and to the southwest, the Kirkjubøreyn. They are separated by the Sandá River. The city itself has a population of 13,957 (2022), and the greater urban area has a population of 21,078, including the suburbs of Hoyvik and Argir. The Norse (Scandinavians) established their parliament on the Tinganes peninsula in AD 850. Tórshavn thus became the capital of the Faroe Islands and has remained so ever since. 2019 Danish General Election
General elections were held in the Kingdom of Denmark on 5 June 2019 to elect all 179 members of the Folketing; 175 in Denmark proper, two in the Faroe Islands and two in Greenland. The elections took place ten days after the European Parliament elections. The elections resulted in a victory for the "red bloc", comprising parties that supported the Social Democrats' leader Mette Frederiksen as candidate for Prime Minister.
