Barbara Cochran
Barbara Ann Cochran (born January 4, 1951) is a former World Cup alpine ski racer and Olympic gold medalist from the United States. Born in Claremont, New Hampshire, Cochran was the second of four siblings of the famous "Skiing Cochrans" family of Richmond, Vermont, which has operated a small ski area in their backyard since 1961. Her father, Gordon "Mickey" Cochran, was a longtime coach, coaching youngsters of the Smuggler's Notch Ski Club, the University of Vermont Ski Team, and the U.S. Ski Team. The family has placed several generations of athletes on the U.S Ski Team: three-time national champion sister Marilyn, Barbara Ann, nine-time national champion brother Bob, and two-time national champion sister Lindy. Alpine Skiing At The 1972 Winter Olympics – Women's Slalom
The Women's slalom competition of the 1972 Winter Olympics at Sapporo, Japan, was held at Teine on Friday, February 11. The defending world champion was Ingrid Lafforgue of France, while her sister Britt Lafforgue was the defending World Cup downhill champion and France's Françoise Macchi led the 1972 World Cup. Barbara Cochran was the winner, edging Danièle Debernard by a scant two hundredths of a second; the two had the fastest times in both runs and were well ahead of the field. Alpine Skiing
Alpine skiing, or downhill skiing, is the pastime of sliding down snow-covered slopes on skis with fixed-heel bindings, unlike other types of skiing ( cross-country, Telemark, or ski jumping), which use skis with free-heel bindings. Whether for recreation or for sport, it is typically practiced at ski resorts, which provide such services as ski lifts, artificial snow making, snow grooming, restaurants, and ski patrol. "Off-piste" skiers—those skiing outside ski area boundaries—may employ snowmobiles, helicopters or snowcats to deliver them to the top of a slope. Ryan Cochran-Siegle
Ryan Cochran-Siegle (born March 27, 1992, nicknamed "RCS" ) is an American World Cup alpine ski racer and a member of the Skiing Cochrans family. Cochran-Siegle specializes in giant slalom and super-G, and also races in downhill and combined. He made his World Cup debut on November 26, 2011; his Olympic debut was in 2018, and he was the silver medalist in the Super-G in 2022. Career Cochran-Siegle learned to ski at around the age of two, being taught by his mother Barbara Cochran, gold medalist in the slalom at the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo, Japan. After the 2010 season, he joined the U.S. Development Team, and one year later, he was promoted to the National B Team. Robby Kelley
Robby Kelley (born May 26, 1990) is an American alpine ski racer from Starksboro, Vermont. Kelley specializes in the technical events of Slalom and Giant Slalom. He made his World Cup debut on October 27, 2012, and has represented the U.S. the World Championships in 2013 and 2017. He helped found Redneck Racing along with Andrew McNealus and Tucker Marshall. They are a team of independent Vermont racers. In 2019 he started Castleton University and will be playing football with them and skiing for the Division III Spartans. Tim Kelley (born May 20, 1986) is a former American alpine ski racer. He was born in Burlington, Vermont to former alpine skier Lindy Cochran and her husband Steve Kelley. Jimmy Cochran
James Michael Cochran (born May 29, 1981) is a former World Cup alpine ski racer from the United States. He specialized in the technical events and his best World Cup finish was seventh in a Giant slalom in December 2005. Born in Burlington, Vermont, Cochran is the son of Bob Cochran, one of the "Skiing Cochrans" family of Richmond, Vermont. He represented the U.S. in the Winter Olympics in 2006 and 2010 and the World Championships in 2005, 2007, and 2009. Cochran's best Olympic finish was 12th in the slalom in 2006, and his best result at the world championships was tenth in the slalom at Val d'Isère in 2009. He won U.S. national titles in the giant slalom and slalom on successive days in 2004 at Alyeska in Alaska. Lindy Cochran
Linda Lorraine "Lindy" Cochran Kelley (born July 10, 1953) is a former World Cup alpine ski racer from the United States. Cochran is the youngest of four siblings of the "Skiing Cochrans" family of Richmond, Vermont, whose parents built and operated a ski hill in their back yard. Named to the U.S. Ski Team in 1970, Cochran competed in the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck and finished sixth in the slalom and 12th in the giant slalom. She finished 14th in slalom at the World Championships in 1974 at St. Moritz, Switzerland. Cochran competed on the World Cup circuit in the mid-1970s, then attended the University of Vermont in Burlington and raced for the Catamounts. Bob Cochran (skier)
Robert Bruce "Bob" Cochran, M.D. (born December 11, 1951) is a former World Cup alpine ski racer from the United States. Born in Claremont, New Hampshire, Cochran was a member of the Skiing Cochrans family of Richmond, Vermont. He had one World Cup victory, four podiums, and 21 top ten finishes. His best finish in the World Cup season standings was in 1973: eighth overall and ninth in slalom. Cochran also won the combined event at Kitzbühel, Austria, the first win in that event by an American, although not an official World Cup race at the time. His sole World Cup win was in giant slalom, which he considered his weakest event. That win was the first by an American male in a World Cup giant slalom. Richmond, Vermont
Richmond is a town in Chittenden County, Vermont, United States. As of the 2020 census the population was 4,167. The main settlement of Richmond, in the north-central part of town, is a census-designated place (CDP), with a population of 853 at the 2020 census; it was formerly an incorporated village.
