Baquer Namazi
Mohammad Baquer Namazi ( fa, محمدباقر نمازی; born 3 December 1936) is an Iranian-American former civil servant who served as Governor of Khuzestan Province under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. He was imprisoned in Iran from 2016 until 2022. On October 13, 2015, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps arrested his son, Siamak Namazi, while he was in the country on business. The Revolutionary Guards subsequently arrested Baquer as well on February 22, 2016, when he flew into the country to visit his imprisoned son. On October 17, 2016, Iranian authorities sentenced Baquer and Siamak to ten years in prison for "collusion with an enemy state," in reference to the United States. Namazi was released on October 1, 2022 during the Mahsa Amini protests. Their release was purportedly in exchange for the release of $7 billion in frozen Iranian assets, however the United States refuted any connection between releasing the hostages and the frozen assets. Khuzestan Province
Khuzestan Province (also spelled Xuzestan; fa, استان خوزستان ''Ostān-e Xūzestān'') is one of the 31 provinces of Iran. It is in the southwest of the country, bordering Iraq and the Persian Gulf. Its capital is Ahvaz and it covers an area of . Since 2014, it has been part of Iran's Region 4. Historically, one of the most important regions of the Ancient Near East, Khuzestan is what historians refer to as ancient Elam, whose capital was in Susa. Siamak Namazi
Siamak Namazi ( fa, سیامک نمازی; born September 14 or October 14, 1971) is an Iranian-American businessman. He had been detained in Evin Prison in Iran from October 13, 2015, until his release. On February 22, 2016, Iranian authorities arrested Baquer Namazi, the father of Siamak, when he arrived in the country to visit his son. On October 18, 2016, Baquer and Siamak Namazi were sentenced to 10 years in prison for collaborating with a foreign government. ''CNN'' reported that according to his legal team, he was the "longest-held Iranian-American imprisoned in Iran." He was released on a brief furlough on October 1, 2022. Mahsa Amini Protests
Civil unrest and protests against the government of Iran associated with the death in police custody of Mahsa Amini ( fa, مهسا امینی) began on 16 September 2022 and are ongoing as of December 2022. Amini had been arrested by the Guidance Patrol for allegedly violating Iran's mandatory hijab law by wearing her hijab "improperly" while visiting Tehran from Saqqez. According to eyewitnesses, she had been severely beaten by Guidance Patrol officers, an assertion denied by Iranian authorities. As the protests spread from Amini's hometown of Saqqez to other cities in the province of Kurdistan and throughout the country, the government responded with widespread Internet blackouts, nationwide restrictions on social media usage, tear gas and gunfire. Bring Our Families Home
Bring Our Families Home (BOFH) is a campaign by family members of American hostages and wrongfully held detainees advocating for their immediate release. The James Foley Legacy Foundation estimates that there are approximately sixty Americans who are being held hostage or wrongfully detained abroad. The Foley Foundation provides support to BOFH. The successful advocacy campaign of Trevor Reed's family, which pressured the U.S. government to secure his release from Russia, was a transformative moment for the families who founded BOFH. The detention of Brittney Griner in Russia, who is a member of BOFH, has elevated the profile of wrongful detentions and American hostages.
