Manuel Baquedano
Manuel Jesús Baquedano González (; January 1, 1823 – September 30, 1897) was a Chilean soldier and politician, who served as Commander-in-chief of the Army during the War of the Pacific, and briefly as President of Chile during the civil war of 1891. Manuel Baquedano was of Spanish (Navarra) descent. He took part in the War of the Confederation, the revolutions of 1851 and 1859, the Occupation of Araucanía, and the War of the Pacific. He also served as Senator for Santiago and for Colchagua. He was instrumental in reorganizing the Army and establishing the Military Academy. Early life Manuel Baquedano was born in Santiago, the son of cavalry colonel Fernando Baquedano and of Teresa González de Labra y Ros. Fernando Baquedano
General Fernando Baquedano Rodríguez (May 28, 1796 – October 20, 1862) was a Chilean military and political figure who served in the Chilean War of Independence and the War of the Confederation. Fernando Baquedano was of Basque descent, his ascendants came from Abarzuza. Fernando Baquedano was born in Santiago, the son of Miguel Baquedano y Zebreros and of Isidora Rodríguez Rojas. Miguel Baquedano was born in Leon, Nicaragua in 1772 and sailed to Santiago to farm sheep in 1791. Miguel Baquedano was the son of Navarrese settler and sailor Jose Juan Baquedano who sailed to Honduras from Pontevedra, Spain in 1763, moving on to San Salvador before finally settling down in Nicaragua. In 1808, at the age of 12, the adolescent Fernando joined the ranks of the Queen's Dragoons. Sierra Gorda, Chile
Sierra Gorda is a Chilean commune in Antofagasta Province, Antofagasta Region. The total population was 1,516 as of the 2012 census. The two main settlements are the villages of Sierra Gorda (pop. 428) and Baquedano (pop. 825). Due to the mining business, Sierra Gorda has the eighth highest average household income in the country ( PPP US$34,842 in 2006). Baquedano is a transfer station between the Line 1 and Line 5 of the Santiago Metro. It is located close to the eastern terminus of the Avenida Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins. Plaza Baquedano, commonly known as Plaza Italia, is a major landmark in Santiago, Chile. The plaza was inaugurated in 1928, being crowned by a monument made by Chilean sculptor Virgínio Arias and featuring General Manuel Baquedano, giving the current name to the urban landmark. It is located where formerly the Mapocho River used to fork. The oval-shaped plaza is the focal point of celebrations and riots in the city. Urederra
Urederra (from the basque; '' ur-'' "water", '' -ederra'' "beautiful") is the natural exit of the aquifer created in the rock massif karst of Urbasa, Navarre. The river rises in The Natural Park of Urbasa- Andía (Sierra de Urbasa), near the village Baquedano. It is 19 km long and flows into the Ega River, which is a tributary of the Ebro. The first emerge is produced in a 713 metres high clift in the southern ledge of the rock massif and makes a more than 100 metres waterfall which with the passing of the years has modelled a rocky and karstic landscape. Behind the waterfall there are some smaller waterfalls and a lot of river pools whose water has a unique turquoise colour, which is a remarkable feature of the Urederra River. HMS ''Ariadne'' was a ''Leander''-class frigate of the Royal Navy. She was launched in 1971, was sold to Chile in 1992 and sunk as a target hulk in 2004. Construction ''Ariadne'' was one of two ''Leander''-class frigates ordered from Yarrow Shipbuilders as part of the 1967–68 construction programme for the Royal Navy, the last two ships of the class with the order announced on 29 July 1968. ''Ariadne'' was laid down at Yarrow's Scotstoun shipyard on 1 November 1969, and was launched on 10 September 1971 and completed on 10 February 1973, commissioning on 2 March 1973 at Devonport. She was the last of the ''Leander'' class to be completed.
