Laurens is a village in Otsego County, New York, United States. The population was 263 at the 2010 census. The Village of Laurens is in the eastern part of the Town of Laurens. It is also north of the City of Oneonta. History Laurens is the oldest community in the town. Laurens set itself apart from the town by incorporating as a village in 1811. It was named for Revolutionary War hero Henry Laurens. In 1860, the village had a population of 726 and contained a tannery, an iron foundry, a sawmill, and a cotton mill that was powered by water from Gilbert Lake, north of the town line in New Lisbon. A sulfur spring is located north of the village. The Southern New York Railroad route passed through Laurens, the first car reaching Laurens from Oneonta on July 4, 1901. Laurens is a town in Otsego County, New York, United States. The population was 2,424 at the 2010 census. The Town of Laurens is in the southern half of the county, north of the City of Oneonta. There is also a village named Laurens, located in the town. History The town was first settled by Europeans around 1773. Joseph Mayall arrived in 1773 about one mile north of the present Laurens village. The raiding party responsible for the Cherry Valley Massacre also pillaged part of Laurens and burned some property. Hartwick is a town located in Otsego County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the town had a population of 2,110. The Town of Hartwick is located in the middle of the county, southwest of the Village of Cooperstown. History The town was named for Lutheran minister John Christopher Hartwick (1714–1796), an early landowner of the town. He bought the area (the Hartwick Patent, granted 1761) that now constitutes the township from the Mohawk Indians in 1763. Discontented with the sparsely settled communities of Palatine Germans in the Mohawk Valley to the north, which Hartwick believed made people immoral, he bought the original Hartwick Patent with the intent to build a "New Jerusalem".
