Bankhead (Atlanta)
Bankhead is a neighborhood located west of downtown Atlanta, Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia. It is surrounded by Grove Park, Atlanta, Grove Park to the west, Washington Park, Atlanta, Washington Park and Hunter Hills to the south. To the east and northeast are Hills Park, Knight Park-Howell Station, Knight Park, English Avenue and Vine City, English Avenue and Blandtown. It is also flanked by Rockdale to the northwest. At its center is Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, MARTA's Bankhead (MARTA station), Bankhead station and the city's Maddox Park. The neighborhood schools are The B.E.S.T. Academy, Grove Park Elementary, A.D. Williams Elementary School, Carter G. Woodson Elementary School, Alfred Blalock Elementary School, and Frederick Douglass High School. Maddox Park
Maddox Park is a community park located in the west side of Atlanta (in the Bankhead neighborhood), across Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway from Bankhead MARTA station. It is approximately west of Georgia Tech. The park has an existing rail line running through it, which is part of the proposed route of the Belt Line. The park is named in honor of former Atlanta mayor Robert Maddox and opened in 1931. Donald Lee Hollowell
Donald Lee Hollowell (December 19, 1917 – December 27, 2004) was an American civil rights attorney during the Civil Rights Movement, in the state of Georgia. He successfully sued to integrate Atlanta's public schools, Georgia colleges, universities and public transit, freed Martin Luther King Jr. from prison, and mentored civil rights attorneys (including Vernon Jordan and Horace Ward). The first black regional director of a federal agency (the EEOC), Hollowell is best remembered for his instrumental role in winning the desegregation of the University of Georgia in 1961. Bankhead Bounce
The Bankhead Bounce is a dance that originated in a neighborhood on the west side of Atlanta known as Bankhead. The dance was popularized by a song named "Wassup Wassup" by A-Town Players ( rapper L. "Diamond" Atkins, featuring D-Roc ) that was released in 1995. Within the same year, rap group Outkast released the song "Benz or Beamer" music video featuring the Bankhead bounce. The dance is performed by moving one's shoulders up and down with arms bent toward the chest. Shawty Lo
Carlos Rico Walker (March 22, 1976 – September 21, 2016), better known as Shawty Lo, was an American rapper from Atlanta, Georgia. He initially came to prominence as a founding member of the Southern hip hop group D4L, and in 2000 founded D4L Records. The group reached national status in 2005 when their single "Laffy Taffy" topped the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 and went on to be certified platinum thrice by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). In 2007, Walker began pursuing a solo career with his debut single "Dey Know", which was included on his solo debut album ''Units in the City'', released in February 2008. The group had four members: Parlae (born Maurice Gleaton), Pimpin' (Jamal Willingham), Jizzal Man (Bernard Leverette), and Buddie (Gerald Tiller). D'Juan Montrel Hart (born January 15, 1979), better known by his stage name Young Dro, is an American rapper. Westside Park
Westside Park at Bellwood Quarry is a park in the City of Atlanta located on the site of the former Bellwood Quarry. The park is between Johnson Road and Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway and between the neighborhoods of Bankhead, Grove Park, and Knight Park/Howell Station, of which a large portion of the park falls within the Grove Park boundaries. Westside Park at Bellwood Quarry was a major green space project of the Atlanta BeltLine master plan. The park has trail connectivity to the Proctor Creek Greenway Trail (Phase 1) and will ultimately have connectivity to the BeltLine. Status The land, which was owned by Fulton County, was previously leased to Vulcan Materials.
