Bangued Cathedral
The Saint James the Elder Parish Cathedral ( es, Catedral Parroquial de Santiago el Anciano), also known as Bangued Cathedral, is a cathedral of the Roman Catholic Church in Bangued, Abra, northwestern Philippines. It is situated in Barangay Zone 6 Poblacion (Sinapangan), opposite the town plaza in Bangued. Dedicated to Saint James the Elder, and being the seat of the Bangued Diocese, the church is the heart of Catholic spiritual life in the province of Abra. History In 1598, a garrison was established by the first Spanish- Iloco forces who first occupied the place now known as Bangued. The said garrison was meant to protect the Spanish missionaries, who at the time aimed to Christianize the natives and locate the goldmines, from headhunters that pillage the community frequently. Bangued, officially the Municipality of Bangued ( ilo, Ili ti Bangued; tgl, Bayan ng Bangued), is a 1st class municipality and capital of the province of Abra, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 50,382 people. Etymology The name Bangued evolved from the Ilocano word "Bangen," which means roadblock, anything that discourages. The Spanish spelled it as "bangued." The "D" was substituted for the nasal sound of "H." When the Americans came the pronunciation was changed to "bangued." To discourage raids in the settlement at Bangued, which is usually situated from Pantoc (now called Penarrubia), "bangen" were placed at the roads leading to the town. The Tingguians prevented the Spanish forces from penetrating their area of which they placed roadblocks on all roads leading to the place. The Itneg (exonym "Tinguian" or "Tingguian") are an Austronesian ethnic group from the upland province of Abra in northwestern Luzon, in the Philippines. Overview The Itneg live in the mountainous area of Abra in northwestern Luzon who descended from immigrants from Kalinga, Apayao, and the Northern Kankana-ey. They refer to themselves as ''Itneg'', though the Spanish called them ''Tingguian'' when they came to the Philippines because they are mountain dwellers.
