Bangladesh–Holy See relations are foreign relations between Bangladesh and the Holy See. Bangladesh has an ambassador accredited to the Holy See (Md. Abdul Hannan, as of December 2009), while the Holy See has a nunciature in the Baridhara Diplomatic Enclave in Dhaka. Since July 2013, Archbishop George Kocherry has been the Apostolic Nuncio to Bangladesh. Three popes have visited Bangladesh: Pope Pius VI in November 1970 (then as East Pakistan), Pope John Paul II in November 1986, and Pope Francis in November 2017. Apostolic Nunciature To Bangladesh
The Apostolic Nunciature of the Holy See to Bangladesh is the diplomatic mission of the Holy See to Bangladesh, equivalent to an embassy. It is located at U.N. Road 2, Baridhara, Dhaka 1212. The position of Apostolic Nuncio is currently vacant. The Apostolic Nunciature to Bangladesh is an ecclesiastical office of the Catholic Church in Bangladesh, with the rank of ambassador. George Kocherry
George Kocherry (born 4 February 1945) is an Indian prelate of the Syro-Malabar Church who joined the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 1978 and became an archbishop and nuncio in 2000. After serving as apostolic nuncio to Togo, Ghana, and Zimbabwe, he was the nuncio to Bangladesh from 2013 to 2022. Biography George Kocherry was born in Changanacherry, Kerala, on 4 February 1945, the eldest of fourteen children. He left India in 1967 to study philosophy and theology in Rome, where he obtained his doctorate in canon law. He was ordained a priest of the Archeparchy of Changanacherry on 26 June 1974. To prepare for the diplomatic service, he completed the course of study at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in 1974. He entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See on 1 May 1978. Pope Pius VI
Pope Pius VI ( it, Pio VI; born Count Giovanni Angelo Braschi, 25 December 171729 August 1799) was head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 15 February 1775 to his death in August 1799. Pius VI condemned the French Revolution and the suppression of the Gallican Church that resulted from it. French troops commanded by Napoleon Bonaparte defeated the papal army and occupied the Papal States in 1796. In 1798, upon his refusal to renounce his temporal power, Pius was taken prisoner and transported to France. He died eighteen months later in Valence.
