Bangkok Metropolitan Council
The Bangkok Metropolitan Council, or BMC (Thai: สภากรุงเทพมหานคร; RTGS: ''Sapha Krungthep Mahanakhon'') is the legislative branch of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, the government of Bangkok. It is vested with legislative power and the duty to scrutinise the administration of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration with the Governor of Bangkok as head of the executive. Structure The Council consists of Bangkok Metropolitan Councillors (Thai: สมาชิกสภากรุงเทพมหานคร; RTGS: ''Samachik Sapha Krungthep Mahanakhon''), who are elected directly by voters in each of Bangkok’s 50 districts. The Pheu Thai Party (PTP; th, พรรคเพื่อไทย, lit=For Thais Party, , ) is the third incarnation of a Thai political party founded by former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Move Forward Party
The Move Forward Party ( th, พรรคก้าวไกล, ) is a social democratic and progressive political party in Thailand that opposes the remaining influence of the military junta, which ruled the country from 2014 to 2019. Palang Pracharath Party ( th, พรรคพลังประชารัฐ, ; ) is a Thai civil-military political party with ties to the National Council for Peace and Order, the military junta that ruled the country after the 2014 coup. It was established in 2018 by Chuan Chuchan () and Suchart Jantarachotikul (). The party is led by current Deputy PM Prawit Wongsuwan. First Past The Post
In a first-past-the-post electoral system (FPTP or FPP), formally called single-member plurality voting (SMP) when used in single-member districts or informally choose-one voting in contrast to ranked voting, or score voting, voters cast their vote for a candidate of their choice, and the candidate who receives the most votes wins even if the top candidate gets less than 50%, which can happen when there are more than two popular candidates. As a winner-take-all method, FPTP often produces disproportional results (when electing members of an assembly, such as a parliament) in the sense that political parties do not get representation according to their share of the popular vote. 2022 Bangkok Metropolitan Council Election
Elections for the 13th Bangkok Metropolitan Council were held on 22 May 2022, occurring simultaneously with the 2022 Bangkok gubernatorial election. 50 councilors were be elected to the council, each representing one of the districts of Bangkok. Long delayed due to the 2014 coup d'état, it was the first election to the council in 11 years, since the latest election in 2010. Results show that opposition parties in the House of Representatives, Pheu Thai and Move Forward, gained the most seats and secured a majority in the Metropolitan Council. Pheu Thai gained 20 seats, while Move Forward gained 14 seats. The Democrat Party, the party which formerly had a majority in the council, won only 9 seats, losing over 36 seats from the last election. The Royal Thai General System of Transcription (RTGS) is the official system for rendering Thai words in the Latin alphabet. It was published by the Royal Institute of Thailand. It is used in road signs and government publications and is the closest method to a standard of transcription for Thai, but its use, even by the government, is inconsistent.
