Bangali Paltan
Bangali Paltan was a British Indian military unit formed during World War One. The soldiers were recruited from the Bengal region and trained in Karachi. They fought in Mesopotamia, and were stationed in Baghdad. After the end of World War One, they were used to crush a rebellion by Kurds in the Middle East. 63 soldiers in the unit died. Most of recruit came from middle class Bengali families. Notable soldiers in the unit included Khwaja Habibullah, Kazi Nazrul Islam, Ranadaprasad Saha Ranadaprasad Shaha (also RP Shaha; 15 November 1896 – May 1971) was a Bangladeshi businessman and philanthropist. Khwaja Habibullah
Nawab Khwaja Habibullah Bahadur (26 April 1895 – 21 November 1958) was the fifth Nawab of Dhaka. He was the son of Nawab Sir Khwaja Salimullah Bahadur. Under Habibullah's rule, the Dhaka Nawab Estate went into decline until its actual relinquishment in 1952 by the East Pakistan Estates Acquisition Act. Biography Habibullah was born on 26 April 1895 in Dhaka. His father was Nawab Sir Khwaja Salimullah Bahadur of the Dhaka Nawab family. The Nawab family traced its ancestry to Kashmiri merchants who settled in Bengal for trade. Habibullah went to school at St. Paul's School in Darjeeling, and later continued his education in England. Kazi Nazrul Islam
Kazi Nazrul Islam ( bn, কাজী নজরুল ইসলাম, ; 24 May 1899 – 29 August 1976) was a Bengali poet, Bengali literature, writer, Bangladeshi music, musician, and is the national poet of Bangladesh. Nazrul is regarded as one of the greatest poets in Bengali literature. Popularly known as Nazrul, he produced a Complete Works of Kazi Nazrul Islam, large body of poetry, music, messages, novels, stories, etc. with themes that included equality, justice, anti-imperialism, humanity, rebellion against oppression and religious devotion. Nazrul's activism for political and social justice as well as writing a poem titled as "Bidrohī", meaning "the rebel" in Bengali, earned him the title of "Bidrohī Kôbi" (''Rebel Poet''). Ranadaprasad Saha
Ranadaprasad Shaha (also RP Shaha; 15 November 1896 – May 1971) was a Bangladeshi businessman and philanthropist. He founded educational institutes like Bharateswari Homes, Kumudini College and Debendra College. During the Bangladesh Liberation War, he was picked up from home by the Pakistani army on 7 May 1971 and never returned. Early life Saha was born on 15 November 1896. Debendranath Podder, Saha's father, originated from Mirzapur in Tangail subdivision in Mymensingh District. Saha was born in his maternal uncle's house at Kachhur in Savar, near Dhaka. At the age of seven, he lost his mother, Kumudini Devi, who died of tetanus during childbirth. At the age of sixteen, he fled to Kolkata and initially worked as a day labourer, rickshaw-puller and hawker. Career Saha joined the Bengal Ambulance Corps and went to the World War I. Mahbubul Alam (author)
Mahbubul Alam (1 May 1898 – 7 August 1981) was a Bangladeshi writer. He won Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1965 and Ekushey Padak in 1978. Early life Alam was born in Fatehpur, Chittagong on 1 May 1898 to Moulavi Nasih Uddin and Azimunnessa Begum. He was the second son. He secured a job with the Government Registration Department and served until retirement in 1955 as an inspector of registrations. Career In 1917, Alam joined the 49th Bengali Paltan of British Indian Army, He served in the Signal Corps and Mahbub spent about three years at different stations in Mesopotamia (present day Iraq) before being finally released in 1920, when the Paltan was broken up.
