Banes, Cuba
Banes is a municipality and city in the Holguín Province of Cuba. Banes was an important area for the native Taino people before the conquest by Columbus. The town of Banes is visited by tourists from Guardalavaca as it is the nearest town to the resort, and both are in the municipality of Banes. A museum featuring the Taino culture is situated halfway between both towns. History The name comes from the inhabitants Taino language word ''Bani'', meaning "valley". Hurricane Ike made landfall here as a Category 4 hurricane on the evening of September 7, 2008, causing great losses of property. Geography The municipality is divided into the barrios of Barrio Amarillo, Angeles, Berros, Cañadón, Durruthy, Este, Flores, Macabi, Mulas, Nuevo Banes, Oeste, Retrete, Río Seco, Samá (includes Guardalavaca), Marcané, Veguitas and Yaguajay. Rafael Díaz-Balart
Rafael Lincoln Díaz-Balart y Gutiérrez (January 17, 1926 – May 6, 2005) was a Cuban politician. Díaz-Balart served as Majority Leader of the Cuban House of Representatives and Deputy Secretary of Interior (1952-1954) during the presidency of Fulgencio Batista. Biography Born in Banes, Díaz-Balart was the son the mayor of Banes, Rafael José Díaz-Balart. In 1955, Díaz-Balart gave a speech before the Cuban House of Representatives in opposition to the amnesty granted to his former brother-in-law, Fidel Castro, for his involvement in the 1953 attack on the Moncada Barracks. Díaz-Balart was elected senator in 1958, but was unable to take office due to Fidel Castro's rise to power on January 1, 1959. Rafael Freyre
Rafael Freyre is a municipality and town in the Holguín Province of Cuba. Overview The main municipal settlement (Rafael Freyre itself) developed around the sugar cane factory "Central Santa Lucía". The only middle school in the area, “ESBU Rafael Freyre Torres,” is attended by a few hundred students from small towns near Los Mineros, La Viuda, Cochico, and other nearby towns. Some of its most popular destinations are the north coast beaches, such as Playa Guardalavaca and Guardalavaca, which are both natural white sand beaches in the bordering municipality of Banes. Mayarí is a municipality and town in the Holguín Province of Cuba. History The origins of the city date back to 1757 in Spanish Cuba, when the first farms were established here by immigrant colonists.
