Bandeira is a Brazilian municipality located in the state of Minas Gerais. Its population was estimated to be 4,766 people living in a total area of 484 km². The city belongs to the mesoregion of Jequitinhonha and to the microregion of Almenara. Bandeira is located 37 km. northeast of Almenara, just south of the boundary with the state of Bahia. Highway connections are poor making the region isolated. The elevation was 292 meters. Bandeiras became a municipality in 1962. The main economic activities are cattle raising (22,000 head in 2006) and the cultivation of cacao, oranges, sugarcane and corn. The GDP in 2006 was R$15,053,000. There were no banking agencies . Pico da Bandeira, or Bandeira Peak (Portuguese for ''Flag Peak'', ) is the third highest mountain in Brazil, situated on the border of Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais states. It is the highest point in both states. It was historically considered the highest mountain in Brazil until 1965, when Pico da Neblina and Pico 31 de Março, next to the Venezuelan border, were explored, measured, and both found to be higher. The peak is said to have been so named after Pedro II, Emperor of Brazil, ordered a flag to be flown on top of it. Pico da Bandeira is also remarkable for being the Brazilian mountain with the greatest topographic isolation: 2,344 km (1,457 miles). Bandeiras is a civil parish in the municipality of Madalena on the island of Pico in the Azores. The population in 2011 was 626, in an area of 22.21 km². History The parish is the home of the Island's first judiciary. The area was named "Bandeiras" after the magistrates' official flags raised on the site's many buildings ("bandeiras" is the plural form of "flag" in Portuguese). The settlers initially focused on animal husbandry, agriculture and a fledgling winery, although some commerce and services developed concurrently. During the 18th and 19th centuries its viticulture expanded dramatically, owing to its micro-climate.
