Banda Black Rio
Banda Black Rio is a Brazilian musical group from Rio de Janeiro that was formed in 1976. It has a repertoire based on funk but also including samba, jazz and Brazilian rhythms. History Compared to other soul-funk groups, such as Kool & the Gang and Earth, Wind and Fire, Banda Black Rio developed a particular style of instrumental soul music fusing together elements from a number of genres. WEA had just been established in Brazil, and they wanted to create a band that could be the pioneer of this movement; so they contacted Oberdan Magalhães, a renowned saxophonist, who accepted the challenge together with trumpet player Barrosinho, keyboards and arrangements Cristovão Bastos, guitars and arrangements Claudio Stevenson, bass Jamil Joanes, trombone Lucio Silva and formed Banda Black Rio. ''Maria Fumaça'' is the debut album by Brazilian Funk band Banda Black Rio released in 1977 vinyl format by Atlantic Records (BR 20.022) and issued in 1994 CD format by WEA Music and distributed by Warner Music Brasil (450996349-2). It was listed by ''Rolling Stone'' Brazil as one of the 100 best Brazilian albums in history. The album cover has two overlapping images of the seven members in circle. Photographer Sebastião Barbosa wanted to create a kaleidoscope-like image, but they only managed to take two photos, because as they prepared the second, the camera accidentally fell and hit Barrosinho's face, resulting in a big hematoma in his forehead which was pictured on the cover. Luiz Carlos dos Santos (7 January 1951 – 4 August 2017), widely known by his stage name Luiz Melodia, was a Brazilian singer-songwriter whose music was a characteristic crossover of multiple Music genres including Música popular brasileira (MPB), rock music, blues, soul music and samba. Herbert Jeffrey Hancock (born April 12, 1940) is an American jazz pianist, keyboardist, bandleader, and composer. Hancock started his career with trumpeter Donald Byrd's group. Soul music is a popular music genre that originated in the African American community throughout the United States in the late 1950s and early 1960s. It has its roots in African-American gospel music and rhythm and blues.
