Banbridge RFC
Banbridge RFC (Banbridge Rugby Football Club) is a rugby union club based in Banbridge, County Down, Northern Ireland, in the province of Ulster. It currently plays in Division 1B of the Energia All-Ireland League after gaining promotion in 2017 and Division 1 of the SONI Premiership. In addition to the senior team, the club fields another 5 adult junior-standard teams, and youth U18, U16 and U14 teams, as well as a large mini & Maxi rugby section, Mixed Ability Rugby Team named The Barbarians, a Girls/ Ladies Section. Formation Late in 1925, a group of former Banbridge Academy pupils interested in the game of rugby, got together to form a team to play Newry. The date of that historic first game was 2 January 1926. One of the players in that first game was F. E. McWilliam; later the well known Irish surrealist sculptor. Banbridge spent the next 72 years in the ranks of Ulster junior rugby, with mixed fortunes. Irish Rugby Football Union
The Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) ( ga, Cumann Rugbaí na hÉireann) is the body managing rugby union in the island of Ireland (both Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland). The IRFU has its head office at 10/12 Lansdowne Road and home ground at Aviva Stadium, where adult men's Irish rugby union international matches are played. Rory Best
Rory David Best (born 15 August 1982) is an Irish former rugby union player from Northern Ireland and was the captain of the Ireland national team from 2016 to 2019. He played hooker for Ulster and was registered for Banbridge RFC, having previously represented the Newcastle Agrics. Best earned 124 caps for Ireland, making his debut in 2005 and retiring at the end of the 2019 Rugby World Cup, his fourth World Cup. Best is one of the most capped rugby players of all time, as well as the most-capped forward to ever represent Ireland. Best toured with the British & Irish Lions side in 2013 and 2017. Simon Best
Simon Best (born 11 February 1978) is a former Irish rugby union footballer. He played for Ulster Rugby, Ulster and was club captain in Ulster's 2005/06 Pro14, Celtic League winning season. Simon missed the final game of Ulster' successful campaign in 2005/06 due to a broken ankle sustained while playing against Scarlets, Llanelli Scarlets in the penultimate game of the season. Simon is the brother of the former Ireland and Ulster hooker Rory Best. British And Irish Lions
The British & Irish Lions is a rugby union team selected from players eligible for the national teams of England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. The Lions are a test side and most often select players who have already played for their national team, although they can pick uncapped players who are eligible for any of the four unions. The team currently tours every four years, with these rotating between Australia, New Zealand and South Africa in order. Tyrone Howe
Tyrone Gyle Howe (born 2 April 1971, Newtownards, Northern Ireland) formerly played in rugby union on the wing for University of St Andrews RFC, Ulster, Ireland and the British & Irish Lions. Howe was brought up in Dromore and attended Banbridge Academy. He played for Oxford University in The Varsity Match against Cambridge in 1994 and 1995, captaining the team in 1995. An injury resulted in a three-year absence from rugby, until he rejoined Ulster for the 1999-2000 season. On 10 June 2000, he made his senior international debut for Ireland against the United States. It was Ireland's largest win, the final score finishing 83–3. He also toured with the 2001 British & Irish Lions. In total, Howe won 14 caps for Ireland. Howe retired from professional rugby at the end of the 2005-06 season. Connacht Rugby ( ga, Rugbaí Connachta) is one of the four professional provincial rugby teams from the island of Ireland. Connacht competes in the United Rugby Championship and the European Rugby Champions Cup. The team represents the IRFU Connacht Branch, which is one of four primary branches of the IRFU, and is responsible for rugby union throughout the geographical Irish province of Connacht. Connacht plays its home games at the Galway Sportsgrounds, which holds 8,100 spectators. Connacht play in a predominantly green jersey, shorts and socks. Jonny Murphy
Jonny Murphy (born 6 February 1992) is a former professional rugby union player from Northern Ireland, who played hooker for Ulster (2015-17), Rotherham Titans (2017-18) and Connacht (2018-22). Early life Murphy was born in Belfast in 1992. He attended Banbridge High School in County Down, and played rugby with Banbridge RFC. Murphy played with Banbridge until 2013, when he joined Division 1A side Ballynahinch, another Ulster club. Rugby career Ulster Murphy was involved with Ulster at under-age level. David O'Connor (rugby Union)
David O'Connor (born 19 May 1995) is an Irish rugby union player who plays for Ulster. He plays primarily as a lock, but can also play in the back-row. Born in Dublin, O'Connor attended Blackrock College and was part of the team that won the Leinster Schools Rugby Senior Cup in 2013 and 2014, alongside future Ulster teammate Nick Timoney. Luke Marshall
Luke Marshall (born 3 March 1991) is an Irish rugby union player, who plays centre for Ulster, and has 11 caps for Ireland, the last coming in 2017. While in the Ulster academy, he played in an exhibition match between an Ulster-Leinster team against a Munster-Connacht team that opened the Aviva Stadium in August 2010. In the 2010–11 season, he made seven appearances, including three starts, and scored a try.
