Banai (goddess)
Banai ( mr, बाणाई , sometimes बानाई), also known as Banu (Bāṇu, बानू) and Banu- bai (Bāṇu-bāī, बानू-बाई), is a Hindu goddess and the second wife of Khandoba, a form of the god Shiva worshipped in the Deccan – predominantly in the Indian states of Maharashtra and Karnataka. Khandoba is portrayed as a king of Jejuri, where his chief temple stands. Some traditions do not give her the status of a legal wife and treat her as a concubine of Khandoba. While scriptures related to Khandoba do not mention Banai, she is a central subject of folk songs. Banai is considered a Dhangar, a sheep herding caste, and is sometimes regarded to be of celestial origin. Oral traditions chiefly discuss the tale of her marriage to Khandoba and her conflicts with his first wife Mhalsa. Banai is an antithesis of Mhalsa; together they complete the god. Ehud Banai ( he, אֵהוּד בַּנַּאי; born March 31, 1953) is an Israeli singer and songwriter. Biography Ehud Banai was born in Jerusalem. His father was the actor Yaakov Banai, one of the Banai siblings. The family moved to Givatayim when Banai was four. At the age of ten, he learned to play the cello. In 1971 he was drafted to the Israel Defense Forces, and served in the Nahal infantry brigade. After his discharge, he moved to London, where he played in the London Underground for six months. Banai is married to Odeliah, with whom he has three daughters. Music career In 1982, Banai formed a band with singer Avi Matos. Eviatar Banai (also spelled Evyatar or (incorrectly) Evitar; he, אביתר בנאי; born February 8, 1973) is an Israeli musician, singer and songwriter. Biography Early life Banai was born in 1973 in Beersheba. The extended Banai family is notable as an outstanding family of Israeli artists; Eviatar is the younger brother of the actress Orna Banai and the singer and songwriter Meir Banai, although their father, Yitzhak Banai, was a judge. Banai studied cinema in high school. He also studied piano for eight years. While serving in the Israel Defense Forces he directed and wrote the screenplay and music for a comedy film called ''Six'' that was shown on Israel's Channel 1. Biography Meir Banai was born in Beersheba in 1961, the son of Yitzhak Banai, to a traditional Jewish family which has produced various actors and singers, such as Orna Banai, Eviatar Banai, Ehud Banai, Yuval Banai, and Yossi Banai. Yaakov Banai ( he, יעקב בנאי) born Yaakov Tunkel, Alias Mazal ( he, מזל; March 30, 1920 – January 7, 2009) served as the commander of the Lehi movement's combat unit. Banai was a senior Lehi member who masterminded numerous military encounters against British and Arab targets during the Mandate period and the 1947–1949 Palestine war. Yosef "Yossi" Banai ( he, יֹוסֶף "יֹוסִי" בַנָאי; April 13, 1932 – May 11, 2006) was an Israeli performer, singer, actor, and dramatist. Banai (tribe)
The Banai is a sub-tribe of the Koches, a tribe of India. The Banai first finds mention in the census report of 1891, which states about the sub-communities of the Koches as follows : (of the Koch Garo Hills)Six sections are recorded namely Harigaya, Satparia, Dasgaya or Banai, Chapra, Wanang, Tintekiya which rank in order in which named. The first five are said to be named after the places where they formerly resided, and the last, or Tintekiya, from the dress of the women, who wear one cloth round the waist, another over the body and the third on the head. The term "Dasgaya" actually refers to the areas on the southern tract of Garo Hills of Meghalaya and includes the villages Batabari, Kapasipara, Gasuapara, Jatrakona, Makkabaripara (etc.), which had been inhabited by the Banai since ancient times.
