Baluse
Baluse or Baloese is a traditional shield of the Nias people originating from Nias, an island off the west coast of North Sumatra, Indonesia. Baluse in the Northern Nias is somewhat smaller than those of the rest of the island. Description The shield is made of wood shaped like banana leaves and is held on the left hand which serves to deflect enemy attacks. The surface of the shield is carved with rib-cage patterns from top to bottom. There is a round knob at the centre of the shield, and the shield's handle is directly behind this knob. Culture The Baluse is used with the Balato (sword) or the ''Burusa'' (spear) during traditional war dances such as ''Faluaya'' (or ''Fataele'') and ''Maena Baluse''. Balato (sword)
Balato (sometimes also known as Baltoe, Balatu, Balatu Sebua, Ballatu, Foda, Gari Telegu, Klewang Buchok Berkait, Roso Sebua or Telagoe) is a sword that originates from Nias, an island off the west coast of North Sumatra, Indonesia. Description Balato is a sword with large variety of blades, hilts and scabbards. Three types of blades can be distinguished, all broadening at the point: * with an almost straight blade back and straight edge. The cutting edge is rounded from place to back. * with an almost straight back and a straight or slightly concave cutting edge, while the back S-shape runs to the cutting edge at the site. * with a slightly convex back, a slightly concave edge and a strong concave section at the location (Bowie form). Nias People
Nias people are an ethnic group native to Nias, an island off the west coast of North Sumatra, Indonesia. In the Nias language, the Nias people are known as Ono Niha, which literally means 'descendants of human'. Nias island is known as ''Tanö Niha'', with ''Tanö'' meaning 'land' in the Nias language. Klebit Bok
The Klebit Bok or Kelavit Bok is the traditional shield of the Kayan and the Kenyah people originating from Borneo. It is similar to the shields used by other Dayak people such as the Kliau of the Iban. Description The Klebit Bok is a shield in a shape of a hexagon and painted on both sides. On its front, three demonic faces are often painted, in red, white and black and arranged vertically. Their staring, round eyes and grotesquely fanged mouths are surrounded by tufts of human hair attached with resin. The front is richly decorated with clumps of human hair forcefully pressed into the narrow cracks of wood before being secured by means of fresh wax. The hair is allegedly from hunted heads. It completes the designs, making the shield all the more terrifying for one's enemies.
