Baltimore And Ohio Short Line Railroad
The Baltimore and Ohio Short Line Railroad was the successor to the Pittsburgh Southern Railway, and a subsidiary of the B&O Railroad, and was organized as a legal entity 25 February 1885. The railroad was a link in the attempt of the B&O to serve the Pittsburgh market, and became part of the Wheeling Division of that railroad. Pittsburgh Southern Railway
The Pittsburgh Southern Railway was a railroad in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. It was formed in March 1879 by the merger of the narrow gauge Pittsburgh Southern Railroad (which was the narrow gauge ''Pittsburgh, Castle Shannon and Washington Railroad'' from July 1877 to April 1878), Pittsburgh Railroad, and Washington Railroad. It ran from Washington to Castle Shannon, where it connected to the Pittsburgh and Castle Shannon Railroad. Wheeling, Pittsburgh And Baltimore Railroad
The W&P Subdivision is a rail line between Washington, Pennsylvania (formerly ran until Wheeling, West Virginia), and Hazelwood, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Formerly operated by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and later CSX Transportation, this line is now operated by Allegheny Valley Railroad. The Allegheny Valley Railroad leased the line from CSX in 2003 and acquired it in 2019. B&O Railroad
The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was the first common carrier railroad and the oldest railroad in the United States, with its first section opening in 1830. Merchants from Baltimore, which had benefited to some extent from the construction of the National Road early in the century, wanted to do business with settlers crossing the Appalachian Mountains. The railroad faced competition from several existing and proposed enterprises, including the Albany-Schenectady Turnpike, built in 1797, the Erie Canal, which opened in 1825, and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. The Glenwood B&O Railroad Bridge is a truss bridge in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, which carries Allegheny Valley Railroad's W&P Subdivision over the Monongahela River.
