Balmorhea ( ) is a city in Reeves County, in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 479 in the U.S. Census of 2010. History Balmorhea was platted in 1906. Its founders were Ernest D. Balcom, H. R. Morrow, and John and Joe Rhea; the town's name is an amalgamation of their surnames. Geography Balmorhea is located at (30.983894, –103.742292). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , all land. Just outside the town, Balmorhea Lake provides irrigation water for the local communities. Demographics 2020 census As of the 2020 United States census, there were 408 people, 173 households, and 138 families residing in the city. 2000 census As of the census of 2000, there were 527 people, 179 households, and 139 families residing in the city. Balmorhea Lake
Background Balmorhea Lake is a reservoir on Sandia Creek southeast of downtown Balmorhea, Texas. Water from Toyah Creek, fed by the nearby San Solomon Springs, is also fed into the reservoir, as is excess water in the Phantom Lake Canal. Historians believe that this area of lake has been around for more than 11,000 years. This means that this lake has provided resources for Native tribes and animals that may be extinct today. The reservoir was built in 1917 by the construction of a dam by the Reeves County Water Improvement District. The reservoir provides water for irrigation, and is a popular recreational spot for locals. Balmorhea Lake is also known as Lower Parks Reservoir. Flora Balmorhea Lake is home to many species of Bulrush and Sago Pondweed. Balmorhea State Park is a state park located on the San Solomon Springs in Reeves County, Texas, opened in 1968. The closest city is Balmorhea, Texas. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department manages the park. The park is open year-round, and visitation is capped at 900 people per day. Features The main feature of the park is the , freshwater pool built around the springs. It is the world’s largest spring-fed swimming pool. The spring has a constant flow of 22 to a day so no chlorination is required. The water temperature ranges from and up to deep. The pool bottom is flat in the more shallow areas and has a more natural rock bottom in the deeper areas. The pool is used for swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving. History The band self-released their first album, self-titled ''Balmorhea'' in April 2007, and their second album '' Rivers Arms'' in February 2008, and released a limited EP in the fall of 2008. The group released their third full-length album, '' All is Wild, All is Silent'' on Western Vinyl Records.
