Balloo, County Down
Balloo () is a small village and townland near Killinchy in County Down, Northern Ireland. It is 5 miles south of Comber on the A22 road between Belfast and Downpatrick. It is situated in the townland of the same name, the civil parish of Killinchy and the historic barony of Dufferin. It lies within the Ards and North Down Borough. It had a population of 189 people (83 households) in the 2011 Census. (2001 Census: 159 people) Places of interest Originally a coaching house dating back to the late 17th century, Balloo House is a pub and restaurant, with stone floors and working Aga dominating the historic kitchen bar. It was once a large farmhouse, bought by the McConnell family in 1893, and has been a licensed premises ever since. Ards And North Down Borough Council
Ards and North Down Borough Council is a local authority in Northern Ireland that was established on 1 April 2015. It replaced Ards Borough Council and North Down Borough Council. The first elections to the authority were on 22 May 2014 and it acted as a shadow authority, prior to the creation of the Ards and North Down district on 1 April 2015. The district was originally called "North Down and Ards" but the council was known as "Ards and North Down District Council". Councillors on the transitional shadow authority (prior to the council's official creation) voted on 15 December 2014 to submit an application to the Department of the Environment to change the name to ''East Coast Borough Council'' with effect from 1 April 2015. John Jordan (diplomat)
Sir John Newell Jordan (5 September 1852 – 14 September 1925) was a British diplomat. Early life and career Jordan was born in Balloo, County Down, Ireland, the son of John Jordan, a wealthy Presbyterian farmer, and his wife Mary (née Newell). He apparently never lost his Ulster accent. He was educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution, Queen's College, Belfast and Queen's College, Cork. In 1876 he joined the Chinese Consular Service as a student interpreter. He held various posts in South China before being appointed Chinese Secretary at the British Legation in Peking in 1891. In 1896 he was appointed Consul-General at Seoul, Korea, becoming ''Chargé d'affaires'' in 1898 and Minister-Resident in August 1901. He remained there until November 1905, being appointed Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG) in 1904. AGA Cooker
The AGA cooker oven is a Swedish oven and cooker. Invented and initially produced in Sweden, since 1957 all production has been located in the UK. History Originally developed to burn coal or anthracite, the Aga cooker was invented in 1922 by the Nobel Prize-winning Swedish physicist Gustaf Dalén (1869–1937), who was employed as the chief engineer of the Swedish AGA company (Swedish ''Svenska Aktiebolaget Gasaccumulator'', English ''Swedish Gas Accumulator, Limited''). Dalén lost his sight in an explosion while developing his earlier invention, a porous substrate for storing gases, Agamassan. Dufferin (barony)
Dufferin () is a historic Barony (Ireland), barony in County Down, Northern Ireland. It is on the southern half of the west shore of Strangford Lough, and is bordered by three other baronies: Castlereagh Lower to the north; Castlereagh Upper to the west; and Lecale Lower to the south. History Dufferin, along with the barony of Kinelarty and part of Castlereagh was at one time part of the territory of the ''Cenél Foghartaigh'' (Kinelarty), ruled by the ''Mac Artáin'' (MacCartan) sept. The ''Ó Labhradha'' (Lowry, Lavery) sept are also noted in Dufferin. Barony (geographic)
A barony is an administrative division of a county in Scotland, Ireland, outlying parts of England and historically France. It has a lower rank and importance than a county. Origin A geographic barony is a remnant from mediaeval times of the area of land held under the form of feudal land tenure termed feudal barony, or barony by tenure, either an English feudal barony, a Scottish feudal barony or an Irish feudal barony, which all operated under different legal and social systems. Just as modern counties are no longer under the administrative control of a noble count or earl, geographic baronies are generally no longer connected with feudal barons, certainly not in England where such tenure was abolished with the whole feudal system by the Tenures Abolition Act 1660.
