Alessandro Ballan (born 6 November 1979 in Castelfranco Veneto, Veneto) is an Italian former professional road bicycle racer who most recently rode for UCI World Tour team . He is best known for winning the World Road Race Championships, in 2008. Although he possessed a frame that was usually more associated with climbing, Ballan established himself as a leading spring classics contender. His nickname, ''Bontempino'', is a diminutive reference to Guido Bontempi, to whom he bears a resemblance. Career Ballan turned professional in 2004 with the team. Despite a decent amateur career, Ballan was not sought after by professional teams, and required a little bit of help to secure a professional contract. Fahd Ballan ( ar, فهد بلان; 22 March 1933 – 24 December 1997) was a popular Syrian Druze singer and actor. Like most of his generation of artists who started their show business careers in the early sixties he was exposed to a world of influences of those decades of music glory. His voice and looks made him a symbol of masculinity and won him many acting roles in his youth. Fahd Ballan traveled to Egypt and worked with Farid al-Atrash. He married actress Mariam Fakhr Eddine and had an acting career. At least one of his tracks (Ma Aqdarshi Ala Kidah ) is done in Egyptian dialect. Hani Taleb Ballan (born 13 July 1967) is the chief executive officer of the highest tier of professional football league in Qatar, the Qatar Stars League (QSL), a position he has held since 2014. Education Ballan studied mechanical engineering at Oxford Brookes University in England, UK. He also holds a Pre-Masters Diploma in Project Management from a course he took in Paris, France at the Lille University of Science and Technology. Refereeing career Ballan began his career as a professional referee in 1992 and spent a total of 12 years officiating the game. Sam Ballan (1911 – February 1, 1998), known by his pen name Sam Marcy, was an American lawyer, writer, and Marxist-Leninist activist of the post-World War II era. He co-founded the Workers World Party in 1959 and served as its chairperson until his death. Biography Marcy was born in the Russian Empire to Jewish parents. During the Russian Civil War, his family was a target of anti-Jewish pogroms by the White movement and received protection from the communist forces. They resettled in Brooklyn, where Marcy became an activist for the Communist Party USA. He studied law at St. Johns University and provided legal advice to labor unions in New York. Marcy grew discontented as a member of the Communist Party, viewing the Third International as increasingly detached from working class interests and instead a mouthpiece for Joseph Stalin, whose oppressive bureaucracy he despised.
