''Balince'' is a compilation album of Marty Balin's work, including work from his solo albums and also including tracks from Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, and KBC Band. The album also includes unreleased tracks from the KBC Band sessions. The album was released shortly after the Jefferson Airplane reunion album and tour. Marty Balin
Martyn Jerel Buchwald (January 30, 1942 – September 27, 2018), known as Marty Balin (), was an American singer, songwriter, and musician best known as the founder/leader and one of the lead singers and songwriters of Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship. Early life Balin was born Martyn Jerel Buchwald in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of Catherine Eugenia "Jean" (née Talbot) and Joseph Buchwald. His paternal grandparents emigrated from Eastern Europe. His father was Jewish and his mother was Episcopalian. Buchwald attended Washington High School in San Francisco, California. As a child, Balin was diagnosed with autism. Career Early musical work In 1962, Buchwald changed his name to Marty Balin, and began recording with Challenge Records, releasing the singles "Nobody But You" and "I Specialize in Love". Hearts (song)
"Hearts" is a song written by Jesse Barish and performed by Marty Balin in 1981, included in his debut solo album '' Balin''. It was Balin's third single in nineteen years (after his distant and unsuccessful songs "Nobody but You" and "I Specialize in Love"/"You Are the One" of 1962 ) and the biggest hit of his solo career. It reached #8 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100, #9 on the U.S. adult contemporary chart, and #20 on the U.S. rock chart in 1981. The song was produced by John Hug. The single ranked #41 on the ''Billboard'' Year-End Hot 100 singles of 1981. A music video for also made and produced for the song, which takes place on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco. Robin Sylvester
Robin Sylvester (1950 – 29 October 2022) was an English musician who was best known as a member of the American band RatDog. Although primarily a bass player, he played several instruments, including the guitar and keyboards, and did extensive arranging. Sylvester began his professional music career with the ''a cappella'' London Boy Singers chorus in the 1960s, and as a sound engineer in 1969. Working as an assistant at Abbey Road Studios when The Beatles recorded their eponymous album, he was inspired by Paul McCartney to take up the bass guitar. He also used early synthesisers while playing with and producing Byzantium in 1971. While touring with Dana Gillespie, he moved to the United States in 1974. Tim Gorman
Tim Gorman is an American pianist, composer, arranger and record producer. Gorman studied music composition at the University of Portland in Oregon, under Philippe De La Mare, himself a former student of Nadia Boulanger. Biography Gorman graduated in 1974 and went on to work as a session musician, most notably from the 1980s until the present. His work along the way included collaborations with Duane Eddy, Paul Kantner, the Rolling Stones and the Who, and Jefferson Starship. Gorman took part in the recording of the Who's album ''It's Hard'' and the subsequent tour in 1982. In 1984, he was the keyboardist in The V.U. Slick Aguilar
Mark "Slick" Aguilar (born 1954) is an American guitarist. He has worked with a number of notable musicians but is probably best known as a member of Jefferson Starship. From 1974-1980 he was an in house guitar player for TK studios in N. Miami. He recorded with KC & the Sunshine Band, Bobby Caldwell, Latimore, George & Gwen McCrae, Clarence Reid, Timmy Thomas and Betty Wright. He played guitar with KC & the Sunshine Band and Wayne Cochran during the late 1970s before moving to the West Coast. It was there that he recorded with, Buddy Miles' band and in 1982-84 he toured with David Crosby. In 1984 Slick joined Marty Balin's band which led to him being hired to play lead guitar in the KBC Band. When Paul Kantner reformed Jefferson Starship in 1992 he hired Slick as the band's lead guitarist, a position that lead to musical director that he held until 2012. Kazumasa Oda
is a Japanese singer-songwriter, and composer. He was the leader of folk rock band Off Course from 1969 to 1989, and has done solo work since 1985. As the vocalist of Off Course, Oda wrote many Japanese standard numbers in the 70s and 80s. The group's most successful singles—"Sayonara" (1979), "Yes-No" (1980), and "Kimi ga Uso o Tsuita" (1984)—were written by Oda. In 1985 he began work as a solo musician. He produced many hit singles as singer-songwriter, such as "Little Tokyo" (1989), "Itsuka Dokokade" (1992), "Tsutaetai Koto ga Arunda" (1997) and "Kirakira" (2002). KBC Band (album)
''KBC Band'' is KBC Band's only album, featuring Paul Kantner, Marty Balin, and Jack Casady from Jefferson Airplane. The single "It's Not You, It's Not Me" was released shortly before the album's release. When originally released, the album cover was printed on both the outside and inside. In one vinyl release, the inside jacket of the album had a picture of a road with a car traveling on it with sign in the distance that said: "Life is a test. Had this been a real life, you would have been told where to go and what to do" — a satire of the message broadcast by the Emergency Broadcast System.
