Robert Bales
Robert Bales (born June 30, 1973) is a former United States Army sniper who fatally shot or stabbed 16 Afghan civilians in a mass murder in Panjwayi District, Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, on March 11, 2012 – an event known as the Kandahar massacre. In order to avoid the death penalty, he pleaded guilty to 16 counts of murder, six counts of attempted murder, and seven counts of assault in a plea deal. On August 23, 2013, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Before sentencing, Bales expressed his regret by referring to the murders as "an act of cowardice". Steve Bales (born October 7, 1942) is a former NASA engineer and flight controller. He is best known for his role during the Apollo 11 lunar landing. Early life Bales was born in Ottumwa, Iowa, and grew up in the nearby town of Fremont. His father was a school janitor and his mother was a beautician. From a young age he had an interest in space and at the age of 13 he was deeply affected by a ''Wonderful World of Disney'' television show that discussed the future of space travel. Michael Raymond Bales (born August 6, 1971) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey goaltender. He played in the National Hockey League over four seasons from 1992 to 1997 with the Boston Bruins and the Ottawa Senators, accumulating a record of 2–15–1 and a goals against average of 4.13 in 23 games. He currently serves as goaltending coach for the NHL's Buffalo Sabres. He was a Progressive Conservative member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1963 to 1975 who represented the riding of York Mills. Wesley Owen "Lee" Bales (born December 4, 1944) is an American former professional second baseman who played six seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB). His career, which lasted from 1963 to 1968, included 31 games played for the Atlanta Braves and the Houston Astros. A switch-hitter who threw right-handed, he stood and weighed . Burton Franklin Bales (April 20, 1916, Stevensville, Montana – October 26, 1989, San Francisco) was an American jazz stride pianist. Bales began to play piano at age twelve, and played in hotels and nightclubs in California in the 1930s. He played regularly in San Francisco in the 1940s, with Lu Watters's Yerba Buena Jazz Band, but was drafted in 1943 and only recorded with that group on one brief session with Bunk Johnson. He was discharged for myopia and led his own band from 1943 to 1946 before taking an extended residency at San Francisco's 1018 Club. He played with Turk Murphy (1949–50), Bob Scobey, and Marty Marsala, then played mostly solo between 1954 and 1966; one of his regular gigs was at Pier 23.
